Show Volume XIV Issue XV The Ogden Valley news Page 5 May 15, 2007 Student from Nordic Valley Wins Top Local Student to Perform in Honors at Utah State History Fair— Production of “Grease is the Word” Will represent Utah at national competition in Maryland On April 11, Connor Padilla was awarded first place at the Utah State History Fair competition held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Connor ’s first place award was Connor Padilla in the area of Senior Individual Performance (9th-12th grades). Connor wrote and performed a piece depicting Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Civil War Congressional Medal Winner who led his men to victory on Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Connor will now travel to the University of Maryland in June and represent Utah at the National History Day competition. Connor not only had to write and perform an original piece, but also had to write a 500- word paper and annotated bibliography. All had to be related to the 2007 National History Day theme “Triumph and Tragedy.” All students were judged not only on their entry, but also on historical quality and relation to the annual theme. National History Day is a yearlong program for students interested in history. It is an exciting way to study history and learn about people and events that interest the individual student. Students can express what they have learned through performances, documentaries, papers, or exhibits. Each year, Utah holds regional history competitions. Winners are then allowed to compete at the Utah State History Fair. Connor received first place at Utah State University at the Northern Utah History Fair prior to competing at the Utah State History Fair. Connor is a 9th grader at Snowcrest Jr. High and is the son of Megan Timoney and Terry Padilla of Nordic Valley, Utah.
