These retreats began as experimental events coordinated by the Chapel at Hill Air Force Base and the event staff at Wolf Creek Resort. The goal for each weekend is to prepare the families both spiritually and practically for their impending separation. Wolf Creek Resort completely donated the first weekend in April, which was valued at about $20,000. This included all of the lodging, meals, and entertainment for the families and the staff from the Chapel. After April the Wolf Creek Foundation was formed and monies were raised to fund another three retreats These retreats provide something to these families that has never been done before. The event staff at the resort has heard from several career airmen that although they started serving in Vietnam this is the first time anything like this has been offered to their families. The families have many opportunities over the course of each weekend to share memories and create a support group for the people left behind. They also attend several training sessions that deal with both the emotional and practical aspects of sending a family member into harm’s way. As the families check in, they each receive a disposable camera to use during the retreat. It has been repeatedly reported that many of the snap- shots taken with these cameras have ended up in the soldier’s helmet or taped to the dashboard of a tank used throughout their ceployment On surveys that are completed after each retreat, participants are asked to rate ree preparedness for the afer.
