On February 25, 2006, Jed Platt graciously opened the doors of his home, The Old Red Church, to host a fundraising concert to raise money for a medical clinic in Kenya. Over 100 people were in attendance and we all enjoyed the music together and collectively raised over $1,400‘that evening. We know that Jed was looking forward to hosting many such events in the coming months and years, and never imagined that less than one month later, those “an reams and plans would lie in ashes at his feet. His family wishes to sincerely thank his neighbors in Liberty, and everyone in the entire Ogden Valley community for their kindness to him during this difficult time. Speaking for the family, we have all benefit- What Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “charter school” tossed around. You may even know a couple of kids in the neighborhood who attend one. But do you really know what a charter school is? e first charter school was organized in the early 1990’s with new schools experiencing double digit growth during the nineties. Today there are 3,617 charter schools spanning the nation with enrollment of more than a million children. But what exactly is a charter school? thought you might appreciate a few facts. By definition, charter schools are publicly funded schools permitted to operate autonomously. Groups having a desire to start a charter school are required to develop an operational plan that undergoes rigorous scrutiny by the State. This plan has to meet extremely demanding criteria before being sanctioned. Charter schools create their own curriculum that must meet state scholastic requirements. All charter schools must be organized as a 501c nonprofit corporation, and organize a board that governs the school and its administrators. Board members are not allowed to receive any financial compensation. Once a charter school is sanctioned by the state, it is funded by the state but not by property taxes. Charter school admission is free and nondiscriminatory. The bottom line, charter schools simply provide another educational choice for parents. Statistics show that, in most states, at risk children occupy the greatest majority of seats The OGDEN VALLEY NEws’ liability on account of errors in, or omissions of, advertising shall in no event exceed the amount of charges for the advertising omitted or the space occupied by the error. But the simple truth is this; NEA/UEA has no control over teachers at charter schools, meaning less money for NEA/UEA my research I found a few states where unions are trying to organize charter school educators, but with little to no success. Why? Do you remember the movie Matrix? Remember how the people had no idea they were being used until they were unplugged from the system? Well, it seems painfully obvious that once unplugged, educators are finding the real world much more enjoyable. Unlike the movie Matrix, the real world of education without the union is not a wasteland at all, but a bright sunny world where teachers teach, and children learn in uncrowded classrooms and in new and innovative ways. the final testing authority for all public eduation, shows limited no advantage between traditional and charter schools; however, what NCES tests fail to acknowledge is the relation of test scores between at risk students and average students. The good news—at risk students attending charter schools are testing at the same level as average performing students enrolled in traditional public schools. This means charter schools are raising the overall average test scores of students throughout the country. With charter schools offering relief to crowded public classrooms and overworked teachers and administrators, why, why, why, oh why isn’t there more support for this viable option? The answer is See opposition. The Educ Association/Utah Association (NEA/UEA) hates the idea of charter schools.
