Ogden-based Goldenwest Credit Union blocked about 1,300 member debit cards Friday that could have been compromised as a result of the breach and was working on issuing replacement cards the same day, President Shelley Clarke said. “We've taken a proactive approach to make sure those cards can’t go any further,” Clarke said. “We’re not going to wait for our members to report problems.” As of Friday afternoon, she said, none of the potentially affected Goldenwest debit card holders had reported any suspicious transactions on their accounts. The credit union is reviewing the flagged accounts to look for similarities, she aid representative for Visa declined comment Friday, but deferred to a prepared statement: “Visa USA was recently notified by a U.S. merchant that it may have experienced a data security breach resulting in the compromise of Visa account information,” it said. “Upon learning of the compromise, Visa quickly alerted the affected financial institutions to protect consumers through independent fraud monitoring and, if needed, reissuing cards. Visa did not disclose the identity, location of or details about the affected business and did not reveal how many accounts were potentially affected Zions Bank spokesman Rob Brough said a “handful” of the bank’s customer accounts were identified as being at risk when Visa notified Zions late last week. While he didn’t know the exact number, he said it was “less than half of | percent” is its customers. contacted each client who was sotentially impacted by this by telephone, notified them, and replaced their cards,” Brough said. Scott Parkinson, vice president of retail banking for Bank of Utah, said the Ogden-based bank was alerted that some of its customers’ information may have been exposed, but did not expect a significant impact. He suggested that whenever possible, debit card users should conduct signature-based transactions, which are more secure than using PINs. That also applies to online purchases, he said. It was unclear Friday how many other local banks and credit unions could have been affected by the breach, which may have also affected debit cards from other major issuers. isa said cardholders are fully protected against unauthorized purchases, and the company “will continue working with our member financial institutions, merchants, and appropriate authorities to do whatever is necessary to protect cardholders.” Page 15 15, 2006 - Fine Properties at Wolf Creek Resort - Where the Resort Lifestyle is. literally out your back door., al Note: This article is being reprinted from the Standard-Examiner by permission.
