THE Page 14 OGDEN VALLEY NEWS February Volume XIII 15, 2006 Ogden Valley Be the Solution By Laura Warburton given week day, there are a maximum of five fireman and three sheriffs on duty. The State Emergency Authorities are telling us that in the event ofa major disaster, Valley residents must plan on being isolated for a minimum of three days With our limited help, it doesn’t take a math whiz In an extreme emergency/disaster such as an earthquake, major fire, chemical outbreak, or other such event, will you be a help to your family and neighborhood or will you be a hindrance? Take this test and find out. I have a 72 hour kit I have set an escape route in my home. I know where my utilities valves are. I know how to shut them off. I know when to shut them off. I know how to put out a small fire. I have the equipment to put out a small fire. I know my neighbors. I know their strengths: nurse, doctor, etc. We have a neighborhood plan in case of an emergency. We meet on a quarterly basis to update information. I believe someone else will take care of my family. I know how to apply a splint. I have completed a CERT course. I know how to safely enter a partially collapsed building. I know how to run a generator safe Tam too busy to worry about things that won’t ever er happen! Ifa response team is not organized before the tragedy occurs, then the chaos of the tragedy becomes a tragedy within a tragedy. Prior training and organization will save lives. Are you organized? Because many of the bridges hat span routes in and out of the Valley might be destroyed making travel impossible by car, your neighborhood will become your family. Is your neighborhood organized? Who in your neighborhood has a generator? Who is a doctor, nurse, or EMT? Who has a backhoe? Who knows how to safely enter a partially collapsed building? Who will be the neighborhood leader? Do you have vs work number of a neighbor’s husband in case you need to notify him of a critical situation with his wife or children? There are so many more questions that can be answered now, but most of us will never consider the need for these answers until it’s ‘00 late. When that day comes, will you be part of the problem or part of the solution? CERT leaders are trying to organize Valley residents but they need willing participants. CERT teaches the lay person how to successfully interact with trained emergency response teams. If you are CERT certified, you are already part ofa team that is determined to help your family and neighbors survive a disaster. However, completing the course is just the beginning. Once certified you need to take your knowledge back to your neighborhoods and to help formulate a neighborhood plan. r someone else to do it if it’s not being done. It won’t take much time to contact people, create a list with phone numbers and combined assets, and agree on a leader. No need to meet every week! Meet quarterly or however frequent you deem necessary. Update when people move in or out. A small amount of effort and preparation can equate into a huge success story after a disaster strikes. 0 attend the next CERT class contact Brad Nats, Team Captain for Ogden Valley CERT, at 745-4328; or Darla Weston, Assistant to the Team Captain, at 745-2365. Only “‘other people” have to deal with disasters... right? Wrong. This is an attitude that could cost you and your loved ones your lives. A few years ago, a freak tornado twisted its way through Huntsville. Darla Weston, the Assistant Coordinator for the Valley CERT program, recalls with great heartache the phone calls she received that day. “Where is CERT?! Why are they not here to help?” The ff l er yelled. Darla sat stunned. Her only thoughts were, “You are CERT. Why didn’t you take the course and then you’d know what to do!” Consider the facts.
