In recent months therapy balls have gained tremendous popularity in the media and at fitness facilities. I have many clients asking, “Why exercise on a ball?” So here is the exercise ball 101 guide. First, the therapy ball has many names, Swiss ball (from its original therapeutic use developed in Europe), therapy ball, exercise ball, and fitball. These names all refer to large, round inflatable balls with sizes ranging from 45cm to 75cm in diameter. When purchasing a ball, make sure it fits your body’s height and weight. Check the packaging—it should list the appropriate size ball for your height and the ball’s weight capacity. Exercising on the ball has many benefits: Versatility — you can do cardiovascular, strengthening, abdominal, and balance work all on the ball. You can also do exercises sitting on it, lying on your back, lying on your stomach, and even kneeling on the ball. Improves posture - because of the balance component on the ball every exercise you do will work your core trunk muscles It’s fu — working on the ball is very reminiscent of childhood play, which makes ball work a refreshing and fun alternative for exercise. Inexpensive — you can buy a good quality ball for $20-$30. Add a few hand weights so that, for less than $50, you can achieve a full body workout. Space saver — balls require little space for storage, unlike many weight machines. Low impact — if you have joint discomfort, the ball is a great way to get a cardiovascular work out with less stress on your joints. 5. 6. The benefits are numerous as seen; however, one word of caution: initially controlling your balance on the ball may not be as easy as it looks. The first time on the ball, make sure you have plenty of space and a soft surface to land on, or practice sitting on the ball next to a bed or low surface that will assist you with balance. There are many good video workouts on the market for ball exercises and you often can buy a video and ball together. Classes are offered in many fitness clubs, Pilates, and yoga studios. It is great to have some instruction and education for posture and good technique when worka. out on the ball so recommend a few clas Exercising on a ball is great for your body and is lots of fun so whatever method you choose, get on the ball! Exercise classes on the ball will be offered in Eden starting January 24. They will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. Class size will be limited so call Lorrie Harper at 644-8731 for further information and to reserve your space.
