Youth from Eden’s Wolf Creek Ward ar together for Book of Mormon reading marathon. On November 18, 19, and 20, youth aged 12 to 18 gathered at the church with youth leaders and members of the bishopric to read the Book of Mormon together, each taking turns reading out loud. Guest readers also came at different times throughout the marathon Treading activity to read part of the text that for millions of church members worldwide. oung men and young women gathered with their leaders Friday at about 5:30 p.m. to begin their goal of reading the 531 page book within a 24 hour read-a-thon. The group disbanded at 11:15 p.m., only to reconvene Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. Except for a few breaks throughout the day—including a quick breakfast and a lunch delivery by Alpine Pizza, the reading continued on until 11:40 that evening. By 2:20 p.m. Saturday, thegroup was half way through the Book of Mormon. When it became clear they would not be able to complete the text that evening, a new strategy for completing the goal was devised; the group gathered again Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. and read together again until 12:40 p.m. when they broke for Sacrament meeting. At 2:00 p.m., they gathered one last time,“completing their goal at 3:15 Sunday afternoon. About 23 of the 26 students who first began the endeavor completed the task. Youth leaders from the Wolf Creek Ward stated that the activity was motivated by the challenge given by President Gordon B Hinckley for every member of the church to read the Book of Mormon all the way through before the end of 2005. Wolf Creek Ward Bishop Lance Albrechtsen and Young Woman President Sharon Beckert took the idea of the Book of Mormon reading marathon to the youth in the ward for their approval. Excited by the challenge, a date was set, and the reading began! With the help of pillows, bean bags, blankets, treats, and scripture markers; and dressed in sweats and/or other comfortable clothing, the youth completed the reading of the spiritual record and history of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. Beckert stated, “The kids stayed really focused; it was really cool. They really got into it. Going into this activity, we worried a bit that the spiritual aspect of the scriptures would be lost in the fast paced reading of it. But it wasn’t; it was still an awesome experience. It was the first time that many of the students had actually read the entire book all the way through. Motivated by the experience, many have started reading it again on their own, and are trying to complete it a second time before the end of the year Issue VI 1, 2006 Eden Youth Gather for Reading Marathon By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Volume XIII Huntsville Utah Stake Participates in Regional Conference Compiled by Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News On November 6, the Huntsville Utah Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in a regional Northern Utah Stake Conference that was broadcast via satellite to varihe northern part of the state. Comments at the conference were offered by President Boyd K. Packer, who urged listeners to honor their pioneer heritage, and the great men and women who settled the valleys of northern Utah. A native of Brigham City, following are a few excerpts from the counsel offered by President Packer. “As you drive on up through Box Elder County to go to Cache County or to go out to Tremonton and the other places to whom we are speaking, those lofty Willard Peaks were referred to by the early Saints as ““The Presidency.” If you will stop along the road at the right spot and look up at those peaks, there are three of them—powerful, stalwart aks of stone which represent the Presidency [of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints]. That was the anchor in their lives. “When you think of the little that the early Saints had and the much that we have, you can understand what made them strong. They lived the gospel of Jesus Christ. They did not ask any odds from the elements or ea anything else. That is, to seek through the records for the names of your kindred dead. Prepare them so that you can go to the house of the Lord which is close to you and there do the reverent and important work that we have as our responsibility in this Church in this day. . . . “May we be worthy Latter-day ‘Saints and understand who we are and what we have. Be grateful for where we live in these valleys of the mountains where we can live the gospel, raise our children, give them in marriage, send them on missions, and start the next generation who will have the responsibility to carry on when we get old... . “Sister Packer and I came from that little town of Brigham City, from that ordinary family put together by the Danish people who came from Denmark under those circumstances generations ago with the gospel in their heart and a determination to live it. And we are determined to live it, because we know it is true. Santa Visits Subway Santa visits with childn en at the Subway in Huntsville.
