By student reporters Maria Rague and Tyson Johansen DREAM 1493 dressed up in cutee “dlothes” * They soon found out that the sixth graders were having Pioneer Day. The girls wore just what young pioneer girls wore—a bonnet and a dress; and the boys wore just what pioneer boys wore— overalls or jeans with flannel shirts. e sixth grade had a fun time as they rotated through events. One of the events was dancing. One dance was the he Broom Dance. There were two lines. One person was in the middle in the front of the two lines with a broom. The music would play and the person in front of the line came up to the “broom person’s” side and the “broom person” then chose who to skip down the line with. If the broom person wanted to dance with the person on her left or right side, she would give the broom to the person s/he did NOT want to skip down the line with. If the “broom person” wanted to skip with both of the people, the “broom person” would give the broom to the next person in line and skip with both of them. The group had a lot of fun. In the next rotation, we learned how to make cornbread. Some kids were given a bottle of cream. As they shook the bottle, other kids were mixing ingredients, peeling kernels off of dried corn, and putting the kernels in a grinder where we took turns grinding the kernels into corn flour. We also ground wheat. de the cornbread for the etiquette class. Everyone put some of their whey from the butter and the other ingredients into a 9” x 12” pan. In the etiquette class we learned how and what to do when you’re in the fanciest of restaurants—maybe even on a cruise. The boys kindly learned how to pull out a chair for the girls without being asked, and how to serve the girls the yummy, delicious cornbread with their homemade butter and a glass of water. We had to use manners and be polite. Candle making was also very fun. There was a hot bucket full of wax and a string for the wick. We dipped the string in the hot wax trying not to get burned. We pulled it out and counted to thirty and then dipped again. When the candles were done, some looked like demented carrots and others, really fat, skinny, or well done. During the games we had a big hoop and a stick to tap on it as it rolled. In another game, we had two sticks and crossed them. Then we put them through a little hoop and flung the hoop by pulling the sticks out while hoping for the other player to catch it on their own stic In another game, we had a piece of wood with aa little can on the front and back to flip a bean bag. The games were a lot of fun. n our pioneer world, Mrs. Evans was a strict teacher who would paddle you with “the board of education,” put a dunce hat on your head, and/or give you tons of homework. Of course, this is nothing like dear Mrs. Evans, but if you were hive in pioneer days, the teachers were very stric We also were able to use the log Gabin by the school. That was really cool. We used slate boards and chalk. We want to thank all the parents for spending their time helping with this fun event. Celeste C.
