The theme for this event Ogden Valley Montessori School Now Offering Classes for Upper Elementary Students Beginning this fall, 2005, Ogden Valley Montessori School will offer a curriculum for Upper Elementary students ages 9 to 12 years. The program is entitled “Learning Adventures.” The elementary curriculum is in keeping with the Montessori philosophy that children learn best through doing. Students will learn through hands-on activities and experiments, reading books, and meeting characters and situations that quickly become real to them. The Learning Adventures curriculum uses a history-based unit study approach that incorporates the subjects of language arts, social studies, science, and fine arts. Math is taught separately using the Saxon math curriculum, which allows for individualized learning at the student’s own pace and level. The unit study approach to learning found in “Learning Adventures” is different from the traditional approach, which relies primarily on textbooks and worksheets. Unit study is an exciting way for children to learn that inspires a love for learning. The Learning Adventures curriculum brings history alive and makes learning an adventure for students. According to Director Amanda Scheuermann, “Children learn best when their curiosity is piqued as happens, for instance, when they are in the middle of a project and can’t wait to find out more. Their retention is also stronger when learning this way. Once children are reall intrigued by a certain topic, they want to find out everything they can about it, regardless of whether it is on their own or with a teacher.
