The first thing Dave saw when hi eyes opened on that winter’s day in 1963, where he was lying in his hospital bed at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, was a pretty young nurse. What is your name?” He asked with an unsteady voice that was still thick from the heavy anesthetics. “Miss Fietkau.” Elaine answered—trying to aang a t is your first name?” Dave asked. not allowed to give out our names.” Elaine answered, trying to avoid the intense gaze of her patient who could hardly move where he lay with a broken thigh bone, multiple cuts and bruises, and his left leg in traction Q Nurse Elaine Fietkau Butt “6, ” Elaine her patient “with dread. ropes he’ll go through never see him again!” As she left the ward, “This girl is going to be thought as she eyed “If I hit one of those the ceiling and I'll Dave said to himself, my wife!” heaven’s name he had ended up in this hospital, and what had happened to cause him to be lying there in such a dreadful state. He survived the fall of 70 feet. He was trapped for 20 minutes between the elevator and the shaft wall. In “fair” condition at LDS hospital Friday with a broken thigh bone was David Lamar Butt, 24, 98 Cyprus St., Bingham Canyon. He also suffered multiple cuts and bruises A burned out light bulb inside the elevator was believed responsible for the mishap. Earl Thatcher, 661 - qth East, an employee of Deseret Detective Agency on duty in the store, told police the light bulb in the elevator was burned out and that employees had become used to operating a darkened car. He said a safety latch is supposed to prevent the doors from opening when the elevator is elsewhere in the building. The latch was appareth ae ole he said. Lake Police officers, M.L. Stuck, = soak Carl Forsling and Sgt. Cahoon lowered a ladder from the 2 floor to the elevator roof where Mr. Butt was pinned. A doctor administered a shot of morphine to the victim to ease his pain during the rescue operation. Lack of light slowed efforts to free him from his uncomfortable position— wedged partially between the elevator roof and shaft wall. 1 ie fe ofc 2s 2s ois oie oie 2c 2c ok 2 oe 2 2 2 2k 2 2 OK Seven weeks after Dave Butt came home from his LDS mission, he was working as a toy stocker at the old ZCMI store in downtown Salt Lake. Victims of this type of amnesia can remember what hap= right before a traumatic accident and right —but nothing in between. Dave was in the espa for seven months. ei: that time, he only saw Elaine a couple of times. When he went home, he realized that he could at remember her unusual name. He desperately wanted to see her, but try as he might, he could not remember. The day before Dave went back into the hospital to have the cast removed and to learn how to walk again, he was reading the newspaper and could not believe what he saw! There on the page was a picture of Elaine with three other student nurses at Camp Williams. Now he had her full name! Elaine was surprised to hear from the young man and agreed to go out with him on a date. “It might be fun.” She thought to herself. And it was. Elaine enjoyed Dave’s company and especially his witty humor. ave was enthralled with Elaine and was surer than ever that she was the girl for him. Then he thought of a really great way to end this wonderful date. He told Elaine to say “Tissue.” She did so with a frown on her face “Tissue.” Then Dave said, “Now say ‘Terrify.’” Elaine did and then Dave asked her to reverse the words and say them together. She obliged and said, “Terrifytissue.” He laughed and asked if she “got it.” “Yes I did!” She exclaimed and then said, “And no! I do not want you to kiss me!” Dave saidgoodnight and left a little bit disappointed but he had a plan in mind. He wanted this girl to like him and eventually to marry him. He then decided to practice the old philosophy of: absence makes the heart grow fonder. He did not call her for three weeks even tence he wanted to see her badly. “If she likes . even just a little bit . . .,” he thought, “she will wonder why I’m not calling her back after ao Gage Froerer & Assoc. For instance, he opened the car door for her every time—even though he was still on crutches! Elaine started to know Dave well while they were dating. He was indeed the type of man she would like to share her life with. He was of the same religion as she and he told her that he loved children after she told him that she loved children so much that she would not mind having “a hundred children!” Dave always wanted to marry a girl from BYU. He wanted to marry someone from his own faith and with good family values. Through a mutual friend Dave heard that Elaine was‘really disappointed that he did not call her back. She told her friend that she thought that it was a wonderful evening. Now it looked like Dave did not share her feelings. After talking to Elaine’s friend, Dave called and made another date. Elaine accepted and they again had a wonderful time together. Dave realized that Elaine was shy and he decided to take it easy. He playedgames with her and teasing her. doing so, he drew her out of her bashfulness. One of the things he did was to take his class ring off and hand it to her and then pulled his hand back as she reached for it. She would then try to get it from him. This became a game that they played oftena Suri their dates. On their fourth date, Dave again asked Elaine if he could have a kiss. But he got another “No! “Why not?” Dave wanted to know. “T’m saving my kisses for the person aim to spend the rest of my life with!” she told Dave. Dave contemplated this answer and almost asked her to marry him right there and then but he thought that it might be too soon and he might scare her off completely. The parents of the couple started realizing that their children were getting “serious.” Dave’s mother told him, “Elaine is a wonderful eg of te New2W Dey REALTOR Susan Hansen ee oo pe hresortproperties.com Bright health New N Day me 952 oetans 28th Street OGDEN Tues.-Sat. 9:30 am-6:30 pm Enlighten Your Wa www.bndhealth.com REALTOR Dan Mortensen why eet) daniel@c21utah.com Y Ae resort. in a pr’ secluded area w/easy access. 5 AC Lots of trees.Borders the National Forest.
