Pet of The Week The Summit County Animal Shelter receives numerous calls each week from residents who would like to know about county ordinances concerning barking dogs, loose dogs, etc la an effort to enlighten the public, the following information is being offered. If you would like a copy cf the ordinances please contact the animal shelter. LICENSE: All dogs over the age of 4 months must be licensed with the county. A license cost $6 for a sterilized dog, and SIS for a dog that is not sterilized. Licenses must be renewed yearly. RABIES VACCINE: All dogs and cats must have a current rabies vaccination. The vaccination MUST be given by a licensed veterinarian. ANIMALS AT LARGE: All animals must be contained on the owner's property at all times. Neighbors do not need to accept your pet on their property. When your dog is not on your property, hcshc must be on a leash with a responsible person holding the leash. The ordinance is also for the safety of the dog. Most dogs, no matter how well trained, will leave their property under cer- tain circumstances. They run the risk of being hit by a car, getting poisoned, tangling with other dogs or wildlife, or just being lost and unable to get home. Even if the dog is not hurt, if he causes an accident on the highway because people are trying not to hit him, the dogs owner is liable for damages caused by him. NOISE PROBLEMS: It Is illegal to allow your animal, for whatever reason, to make noise to the point it disturbs neighbors. We usually will give people a chance to take care of the problem, but if it continues we will lake action against the dogs owner. Most nuisance barking is caused by boredom or a lack of sufficient exercise. Owners may be cited for not taking rare of the problem, in which case, they will have to go before a judge in court. Excessive barking is probably the complaint we receive the most from people, so dog owners need to make sure their dog(s) are not violating this ordinance, especially when the owner is not at home. j j j j j j j j j I i i ( ; j j j BITES: All animal bites MUST be reported to an animal control agency. The cause of the bite will be investigated and a Health Quarantine for the animal is required by the State Health Department If you are a witness to a bite or are involved in a bite situation, please let us know. This is for your safety and the safe- ty of other people and animals. STRAY ANIMALS: Letting animals run loose is a violation of county ordinances. If an Individual finds a stray dog or cat they must contact Summit County Animal Control within 24 hours. It Is illegal to harbor a stray animaL Once the animal is turned into the shelter, we can get started on trying to locate the owner. j j j !
