Volume EUREKA, UTAH - April Ninety-Eig- ht 1 1 GhaiiS inn Ewell serves m craft carrier Chad Ewell, grandson of Francis Ewell and nephew of Larry Ewell of Eureka, has been a crew member on the aircraft carrier, Harry S. Truman since December. This years He was recognized during the 3002 Utah Volunteer Achievement Awards Banquet. Former Utah Jazz Star Thurl Bailey was the Master of Ceremonies and Lieutenant Governor OIcne S. Walker was the keynote speaker. Both of these people presented Joe with his award. Joe Bernini was elected as Eureka City marshal in 1950 and saved in this capacity for 38 years. Joe was elected as Juab and County Commissioner served from 1978 to 2002. For more than half a century Joe has bee an active member of the Benevolent and protective order of the Elks and has participated in such service County by Betty Cones of Governments. Joe has also served in the western region of Workforce Services as an executive board member and labor representative. On the statewide livel, Joe saved on the Utah Association of Counties as a member of the Aging and Human Services Committee. The staff at the Volunteer Connection, (Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Volunteer Center), would like to congratulate Joe for his outstanding volunteer service and achievements. On April 2, the Young at Heart Senior Citizens had a potluck luncheon and a great speaker. Sandy Evans took our blood pressure and Cleo Judge recorded them. President Grace Conder conducted the meeting. We pledged allegiance to the flag, then Joe Bernini blessed the food. After eating, we had a short business meeting. Don Treloars Senior Citizen of the Year dinner was moved up to May 14. Chad has been in the Navy for 10 years and handles the payroll and other personal paperwork for the 5,000 men and w'omen on board the Harry S. Truman. Chad was bom in Tooele and later moved out of state but has always kept contact with his friends and family here. His wife, Jenny, lives in Texas and he has a aunt, Debbie, who lives in Salt Lake. The jets aboard the Harry S. Truman provide air strikes in support of the ground troops. Chad said although they dont enjoy the thought of killing people, they all believe that they are there to protect the peace. They are trained to do what they are doing and believe its the right thing. The carrier has 10 docks above the flight deck and 7 below. The sailors can go up to "vultures row" and watch F-Hornets and F-Tomcats take off and land. Chad says its very exciting. The flight operations occur night and day. The aircrafts are catapulted off the carrier and when the jets land, the arrester gear snags them on deck. 18 14 He said the crews and pilots are being especially careful in their operations. He along with around 14 other crew' members are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They meet for service on Sunday and have scripture readings daily. Fire prevention meeting set The wildfire prevention meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2003 at 7 p.m. in the Eureka City Memorial Building. The draft of the Fire Prevention Plan and forms for homeowners to record fire prevention activities will be given out. Citizens of Eureka and Mammoth are invited to attend this meeting and participate in making your home and community as safe as possible in the event of fire. There has been a good response form the property owners giving their permission for the firebreak to be constructed on their property and we want to thank them for participating and helping to make our communities safer.
