In an effort to thwart the U.S. advance during World War II, Japanese forces fortified the island of the Tarawa atoll with 5000 troops and navy armaments, and placed sunken ships and debris along the beaches to obstruct landings. Japanese Rear Admiral Shibasaki Meichi said the US would need a million men and a hundred years to capture the atoll. However, at the battle of Tarawa, US Marines captured the islands in 76 hours. Six decades later, sailors like Eurekas Shannon K. Long serve on a ship that bears the name of the site of this fierce battle. USS Tarawa, an amphibious assault ship, is an important part of US naval power. Sailors like Long, the 20 year old daughter of Arthur Long of Sierra Vista, Arizona, maintains the ship as a ready asset in the US arsenal. When the ship deploys in the coming months, it will be able to land 1900 combat ready Marines where ever they are needed. Airman Apprentice Long is a cook who organizes, plans, and prepares meals for the crew. Together, Long and the other 900 sailors on Tarawa work to maintain US forward presence and readiness. Forward presence is a critical strategy that allowed the US to react rapidly to crises around the world. I help out by feeding the troops and making sure that they get the nutrients that they need, Long said. Tarawa has a flat deck for launching aircraft, similar to an aircraft carrier. However, the 820 foot amphibious assault ship is Navy Depot work moves ahead Boileau hovercraft, and transport helicopters. For attacking enemy forces the ship also carries AH-- 1 Cobra helicopters and AV-8- B Harrier jets, which are capable of taking off and landing vertically on the flight deck. The people on board Tarawa are really impressive. There are a lot of interesting and friendly people, Long said, a one year navy veteran. Tarawa crew members are preparing to deploy to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, where it possible that they will take part in the US war on terrorism. When Tarawa embarks overseas later this year, the ship will bring a name with it that is synonymous with heroism. Sailors like Long will work to overcome any obstacle just like service members did to succeed in the battle of the Tarawa atoll. Stoiy by David McKee, a Navy journalist assigned to the navy Public Affairs Center at Naval Station, San Diego. Work at the Depot is really progressing, the Museum is almost ready to again welcome visitors. Actually, quite a few visitors have ignored the mess and enjoyed what they' could see.
