Thank you for coming out and Justin Wall names torch As we reported earlier, Justin Wall of Springville was one of 11,300 torchbearcrs during the Olympic Torch Across America earlier this month. Justin is the son of Doug and Jcannie Wall and grandson of Don and Noel Wall of Eureka. Justin carried the torch for two blocks on Tuesday, February 3th in Provo. It happened so fast, but it was really exciting, his mother, Jeanne Wall said. Justin was nominated to be a torch bearer last April by his school principal, Ray Harrison of Oakridgc School in Provo. When he brought up the idea of nominating Justin to the teachers at Oakridge, every teacher agreed that Justin was the best choice. Justin and his parents found out in July but could not tell anyone until the official announcement scheduled for September. We knew for quite a while and couldnt say anything, Jcannie said. Then the announcement was postponed due to the events of September 1 11. Finally in October, they went to the State Capital where it was officially announced. In November, the 90 torch bearers from Utah County met and was introduced at the Peaks Ice Arena. Then 2 Vi weeks prior to the day Justin carried the torch, the uniform and a special letter was sent. SLOC also provided Justins holder for his wheel chair that was engraved with his name and the date. and Justin could see that he had been a part of it. His parents had taken him up to see the caldron when they were building it and so it was exciting for Justin to see it once it was lit and to know he was The day of the event, there was an orientation at the Provo Marriott where it was explained how things were going to work. Then they went to the place that Justin was going to carry the torch and due to the torch being behind, ended up waiting 43 minutes longer than his scheduled time until he actually got his turn. Once the torch got there, it was crazy. Everyone started running and so we did too and before we knew it, it was over. But it was the most special moment. I wouldnt have taken that moment away for anything in the world. Jeannie said. After Justin passed the flame on, they tried to go the stadium to be a part of the celebration, but it was too hard to get over to it. However, they did get to see all of the fireworks. It was a very Justin for and our exciting day We will remember family. always it. Jeanne said. In the next few days, Justin and his parents watched as the flame passed on and it was exciting when the caldron was lit a part of it. Laura Austin, a KBYU reporter and BYU student, covered Justins story for the KBYU news. She told us she wasnt sure if his segment would be chosen or not and when it came on and they did a segment on LaVell Edwards, we figured that our segment had been cut, but it hadnt. Within a few minutes, Justins segment was aired. We really appreciate Laura for making it even more special for us, Jeanne said. We are very proud of Justin and how he handled this It was a the opportunity. opportunity of a lifetime and a special moment for Justin and we couldnt be prouder, Jeanne said. Doug and Jeanne purchased the torch Justin carried. How. could we not purchase it, it is so special. Although it was expensive, they made sure he had the torch and want to thank Betty Robinson for sending a donation to Justin to help pay for the torch. See Torch on Page 3 |
