As the state's largest general agricultural organization. Farm Bureau is echoing the thoughts of Utah's 2.800 irrigation pumpers who use electrical, diesel or natural gas energy to pump irrigation water. "Irrigation pumpers are deeply concerned about cutbacks or reallocations of energy, particularly electrical energy that would reduce crop production." said UFBF President Ken Ashby. "Unfortunately, we are now paying the price of extreme environmental restrictions on energy development as well as uncertainty in the regulatory environment and returns on capital investments." Farm Bureau is also concerned with the implications of this week's low snow pack. "With less surface water runoff, pumping will be even more important to irrigators." . . Ashby said. With increased energy prices, irrigators will be forced to delay turning on pumps and reduce their overall water use when the season starts in March. While some increased conservation in water and energy use may be possible. Farm Bureau maintains that Utah irrigators have already worked hard to maximize energy and water efficiency. Refinance Call & Although Farm Bureau is unaware of any contacts to Utah irrigators asking them to forgo pumping for this year while being paid by the power company for any lost crops, the organization does not oppose the concept-- if it is voluntary. "If a farmer can be paid for the full market value of crops not produced, some farmers may readily cooperate with the plan." Ashby said. "However, hay and grain producers who produce feed for their livestock would have multiple aspects of .their operation impacted." Farm Bureau also points to Utah's abundant supply of coal--oof the preferred electrical energy generation sources. "We should develop and increase production of the coal," Ashby said. "We also believe it is time to carefully develop additional oil and gas supplies within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." Ashby served on a study team that traveled to the ANWR area to review the possibility of developing such additional supplies last year. The Utah Farm Bureau is the largest general farm and ranch organization in the state with more than 22.300 member families. Its mission is to improve the net income of the state's farmers and ranchers and the overall quality of life in the state and nation through political action, educational and informational means.
