A family owned and operated business in Spanish Fork and Salem, 4i is ran by Cacole, Mike and Alan Gardner. In the nineteen fifties, Alan and his father, Archie, grew and sold sweet corn to the Del Monte Canning Factory. Townspeople bought their canning corn from the trucks delivering sweet com to the factory. With the closing of the factory, the Gardners took orders from friends in town, supplying sweet corn for eating and canning needs. In 1959, Gardners opened their first stand at 600 S. Main, in Spanish Fork, in the driveway of Alan's fathers home. The Gardner family raised, picked and sold all their produce as a family business to supplement their family income. In forty plus years, the produce business has evolved from eight acres of sweet com to nearly ninety acres. In the early sixties, most corn sales were from five to ten dozen ears for canning. Most customers bought only two or three purchases a season. Today, many customers buy two to four ears per day. every day or several times per week. During the nineteen sixties, the stand opened in early August, and few people bought sweet com after Labor Day. This year, the sales season will extend from early July until almost November, or until heavy frost stops the com growth. Gardner Produce sells sweet com, tomatoes, squash, melons, apples, pumpkins and other seasonal produce. For special orders call: 798-211- 9. Gardner Produce sells from two main stands, one at Zeeman's Family Sports, 850 N. Main, Spanish Fork and one at the Salem Chevron in Salem. Gardners also have a third produce stand in Heber City. The produce delivered to their customers is the freshest produce possible. By keeping the number of stands and acres down, better and fresher produce can be delivered. Sweet com is picked and delivered to the stands in small trucks hourly. It is very important that sweet com purchased by customers at five in the afternoon is as freshly picked as the com purchased in the morning. Many customers say Gardners sweet com is the best tasting com in the state. More important than the variety (Peaches and Cream), freshness is the most important single ingredient in the taste of sweet com. Working customers, who come home after five in the horses, broke geldings and mares. Foundation bloodlines! Terms of 2,000 foals sales - 13 down at sale - balanced due on pickup date Sept. 1 6.
