It official!) starts today, the summer solstice. Ate our kids bored yet ' Him often have you heard. "There is nothin' to do?" since" school let out? As parents, we often wish there was "nothin' to do. Sometimes parents feel like their job is to entertain their children. It is not. but summer is an opportunity to help children become acquainted with the many opportunities available to them and for sen ice. Summer is also a time to introduce your kids to new activities, that the) might grow in knowledge and experience. The opportunities are endless in this community and in the valley. BYl' and I' VST offer many activities, camps and training for kids. The City Recreation Department, the Bean Museum and Sundance also have lots of kid things. The library offers a summer reading program and craft classes. From little league, to church programs to giving serv ice, the list goes on. If you need things for your children to learn and do around with your home, the library is full of resource books to help you ideas, crafts, experiments, etc. You might take your children on a scavenger hunt" to collect things from nature, or start them on a project of collecting something like insects or rocks and identifying them. Or they might collect smooth rocks and paint them. Several stones glued together can make animals or other things they can think of. Lei them make images by gluing beans, seeds, noodles, feathers, beads, whatever to make pictures or collages. What kids today need most is to use their creativity. Don't let your kids get bored and sit around doing nothing this summer. With a little imagination you can keep them busy, not entertained, and expose them to a wide range of activities. There is no reason for a child to say "There's nothin to do." nt tens of thousands spectators cheer them on.
