Show Celebrating more than 92 years of service to the citizens of Eureka . Volume Ninety-Fiv- Yellow grup infect fish at Pelican Lake Division of Wildlife Re- sources offices have received several calls from anglers inquiring about yellowish cysts in the muscle of fish caught at Pelican Lake in northeast Utah. Although infected fish may not appear appetizing, there is no reason not to keep an infected fish for human consumption. With careful trimming of affected areas and normal rooking procedures, the fish can provide a safe and delicious meal. These yellowish cysts are the intermediate stage of a trematode parasite called Clinostomum compkmatum, more commonly known as "yellow grub." Aquatic snails act as the first host of the parasite. Many species of fish or amphibians can serve as die secondary host. Blue- - gill and largemouth bass at Pelican Lake are the species commonly observed with the problem. Aquatic birds such as herons, bitterns and gulls, act as the final host for the adult parasite. The parasite can cause localized tissue damage to the muscle or internal organs of the fish, but are not life threatening if present in low to moderate numbers. The parasite is usually noted more in the spring to early summer, after which their numbers decline. Yellow grubs can be treated in hatchery-raise- d fish, but fordiis parasite has never tunately been found in Utah's state hatcheries. There is no effective way to remove grubs from wild fish in a lake or stream. Kids can get free blood screen The Juab County office of Central Utah Public health and the FACT team of Juab and Tintic School Districts are offering a free blood lead screening test tor children from five months to and including five years of age. The screening will be held in the Eureka Medical Clinic Office, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This does involve a finger prick for a few drops of blood. One out of every 1 1 children in te United States has dangerous levels of lead in the bloodstream. Babies and young children often put their hands and other objects in their mouths, these objects can have lead dust on them. Lead exposure in young children is particularly hazardous because children absorb lead more readily than do adults witht eh highest risk being zero through five years. Environmental lead is a toxic substance that affects the growth and development of up to one million US preschool children to date with effects ranging from Silver Festival comming soon!
