Vincent Lambrusco There is probably no more misunderstood, or less appreciated wine, than the Rose or Blush wines. But during these dog days of summer, they should not be overlooked. Rose and Blush wines are those wines that are not quite red and not quite white. They are what is known as a ‘Blanc de Noir.’ That is, they are white (pink) wines, made from red grapes. Since all grapes, when crushed, yield white juice, the color of a wine is derived from the color of the grape skin. The longer the, fermenting grape juice remains 4n contact with the skins of the red grape, the darker the color of the wine. Typically, Blush and Rose wines are made with about 24 hours of contact with grape skins, resulting in the Blush or pink color. In contrast, red wines are often left with the grape skins for the duration of fermentation. And in some instances, well beyond that. Besides adding just a touch of color to the wine, that short skin contact also produces a wine with little or no tannins. Tannins are the substance in young red (and some whites) grapes that give the wine a harsh astringent or chalky taste. Tannins also contribute to a wine’s longevity and usually ameliorate with time. Without tannins, Rose and Blush wines are ready to drink the minute they hit store shelves. Unlike red wines, they usually will not age and are best drunk while young. intense black berry, currant, raspberry (typical for Rose).
