Show MOUNTAIN TIMES Prestigious ‘Women’s Challenge’ Race En Route to Midway and Park City oO of the premier women’s athletic events, the PowerBar International Women’s Challenge bicycle race, will make a three-day stop in Utah in mid-June for the first time. Orem, Park City and Logan are stops along a 12-day 656-mile road race for 100 of the top female cyclists in the country and the world. The $100,000 Women’s Challenge is the only race of its kind for women in North America, says race director Jim Rabdau. “Some of the best athletes in the world will take part. You’ve just got to watch them go. It’s incredible, not for the timid or weak.” Contestants must race each day and ride every mile of the 656-mile route to win. It is similar, but not as long, as the famed Tour de France, a race reserved for men. The sixth stage of the race June 23 will be a grueling mountain route beginning in Midway and finishing in Park City, some 68 miles later. The course heads east from Midway into the Kamas Valley. North from Frances, racers will sprint through The women cyclists will then sprint to Park City for a finish at the top of the town’s historic Main Street. “These women athletes earn respect through these awesome events,” Rabdau said. “The Midway to Park City course is tough with an uphill sprint at the finish.” The PowerBar Women’s Challenge is seen by some as a tune-up for the Summer Games in Atlanta. American Kathy Watt won the 1992 Women’s Challenge before taking the gold in road racing at the Barcelona Olympic Games. “In the last 10 years, the sport has changed dramatically,” Rabdau said of women’s road racing. “The US doesn’t take a backseat to anyone.
