Curtis Realtors of Year By GARY ZAVORAL Editor wanted to give a humorous award at the Uintah Basin Board of Realtors award banquet Friday. .But instead, the award was so touching that Nelson shed a few tears. "We wanted to give a funny award for the dirtiest car or something like that." said Nelson. So she decided to give an award for the least commission made on a sale and found, instead of a comical event, a situation where two realtors sacrificed their commission to help a Basin family. Kathy Smith and Gerrie Buckalew, both of FRA in Vernal, gave up their commission on a home after one of the family members, who had saved his money and had the down payment in the bank lor the house, was injured and had to be admitted into a Salt Lake hospital. While in the hospital, medical payments drained the down payment money for which he had worked hard to get the house Shirley Nelson . lor his family. Smith said, when they heard of the unfortunate incident, she and Buckalew decided that. "Well just give up our commission lor the down payment." t hese two unselfish realtors gave up a good commission so a family could live in the home they desired. And they received the Humanitarian Award fordoing so. That wasn't the only occasion mentioned during the ceremony where Busin realtors have unselfishly helped the community, local groups and Basin residents, as well as helping to generate enthusiasm, realtor spirit, and Basin recognition. Nine other awards were presented to Basin realtors by the Board during the ceremony. One of the most honored is the "Citizen of the Year" award. The late Kenneth Ralph Stringhani received the award for the Vernal area by his wife. Burke Fldredge was honored with the award lor the Roosevelt area. he deserved the Congeniality award presented him as he kept,. the. audience, ip..chuckles. with .his Steve Hall proved localized jokes as Master of Ceremonies. An award given to a person who the audience of realtors and their families were told even the most experienced realtor could learn from, was presented to Vickie Hill. I .a von Bascom was presented the Integrity award:. Lois Dahms and Brent Young were recipients of the Best Dressed award; ERA Vernal Real Estate won the Advertising award. And the award which could be called the Best All Around"award, the Realtor of the Yearaward, was presented to Gerrie Buckalew for the Vernal area and to Jim Curtis for the Roosevelt area. Nominees for Realtor of the Year were nominated by other realtors, a committee chose the finalists and each realty office then voted for the person best qualified based on five criteria: Production, Community Spirit. Realtor Spirit. Business Accomplishments and State Service. Buckalew. who was one of the original organiers of the Multiple Listing Section, is currently on the MI.S Board of Directors and oversees the Advertising! Committee. She is active in ladies' golf as she is on the Vernal Indies Golf chairman and an active member of the Mormon faith. Curtis is also a Real Estate Salesman Liscncing Instructor. Also recognized at the awards ceremony were the members of the Million Dollar Club, for realtors who made sales of SI million or more. The members of this distinguished club for this past year are: ERA -- Kathy Smith and Gerrie Buckalew; Century 21 -- Dart Carolyn Ellis and Ralph Dart; Century 2 -- Country Snow, Gordon Snow, l.ane Yack, Tim Cox and Jim Curtis; Aspen Brook - Dennis Mott. Wayne Reid and Bobbie Mott; Accord - Art Allred; Basin - Larson Caldwell; Bastian Terry Bastian and Opal Orr; Realty World 1 --Ly- nn libruni Kay Librum; Western loind Phil Harrison; High Country-Br- ent Young, Tom Clark, Steve Hall and Danis Rasmussen; Western Sun Phyliss Turner and Bonnie Barker; Home & Land Nick Richensand Monty Lee;and Vernal- - -- -- Goldstar Roger Hacking. In honor of her late husband, Mrs. Ken Strlngham holds the Citizen award. Association and is the Vernal representative to the Utah Indies' Golf Association. She is also very active and is in the presidency in the women's organiation of her church. Ruckiilcw started and managed a new real estate office during the past year which, along with her community activities, kept her quite busy. And during! the period when the business started and she was training new girls, managing thesf office, listing and selling, she went .to school to obtain her broker's lisence. Jim Curtis, the top realty producer of the Uintah Board in 1981. was praised as being a very enthusiastic man. always helping his fellow man. Curtis is a member of the distinguished S3 million club for Century 21 and the topJ" residential agent for Century 21 in Utah for 1981. lie has served two years as president of the UB1C. member of the Lion's Club, a Scoutmaster.
