The rest of us crouched down on the ground and watched from our vantage point hidden behind the bushes across the street. After ringing the bell, our son just barely slid into our hiding place when we saw the door open. We heard the squeals of delight and laughter from the children as they picked up the boxes from the porch. The door shut. All was quiet; each of us staring at the house and then at each other with a smile on our faces. We quietly got up from our hidden position, exited from behind the bushes and walked vigorously toward our house. Our children excitedly said how fun it was to do this activity and how good they felt. They were talking about how the children may be feeling at that time. Our bodies were cold but our hearts were warm as we walked the few blocks back to our house expressing feel- For the week of December 5, 2008 ings of gratefulness to be able to share what little we had with others. When we came, to our house, we all stopped quickly when we saw on our doorstep boxes of gifts and groceries just like we left on our neighbor's doorstep. At first I thought in rapid succession, how did they know it was us who gave them the gifts? Why did they return them? How did they get to our house before us? Then I realized that wasn't possible. It was someone else who had left them — for us. Then I felt offended to think that someone thought we were a. needy family. wal inniviediatily thought of our neighbors we had just visited leaving our presents. Did they feel the same way that I was now feeling? Offended. I certainly didn’t want them to think of our offering to them in the same way I was now feeling. Tears came humbly to my eyes as my heart melted the pride I was feeling. Instead, someone cared about our family to do such a kind deed. Along with my tears, I started to laugh at the irony of the turn of events as we — 9 picked up our gifts and groceries and went into our - warm house feeling ever more grateful for the Spirit of Christmas in our lives. It was a lesson I needed to learn that night. We treasure that night as one of the most memorable Christmases ever — that of giving ... AND receiving.
