The Southern Utah University graduate worked briefly at The Spectrum, then spent 13 years at the Deseret News. He began as a. paginator, designing pages on a computer. He then worked as a news reporter before moving to sports. He covered the high schools for three years and Utah State for five. “At the Spectrum I learned the nuts and bolts of the business, Hinton said. He and his wife, Jody, wereintown forthe St. George Marathon. She competed. He cheered. “I wrote stories, edited copy, built pages and took photos at times. She moved to St. George from Salt Lake about five years ago. Reed is originally from Idaho. He worked asa security guard and as a chemical plant engineer at Tooele Army Depot. During his working years, he and his brother Ross travelled all over the U.S., competing against one another as well as the field. Both Reed and Dee have a large collection of medals they have earned at their various competitions. They are on display in separate rooms of their house. “I know what I can do in the backyard,’ Dee said of her expectations during competition. “I put a little bit (of pressure) on myself? The couple enjoy the competitions, they said, because “we've met so many friends. One thing about these meets is you meet so many friends.’ Reed has competed in a variety of different sports. He enjoys telling of one experience he had in a master’s basketball competition in California. “In the free throw competition I was watching a man from UCLA who had won the competition for the last 10 years, Thomas said. I remember thinking, ‘boy, I hope he’s not in my age group: He made 19 in a row, then had one spin out, made four more, then missed another.” His wife was angry with him, Reed recalled. Of course he was in Reed’s age group. Reed hit 23 in a row, then had his 24th spin outin much the same way the other man had missed a shot. He hit his 25th to unseat the 10-time champion. Of course that medal is among Reed's most cherished. “The best thing to do is be active; Dee said of her reason for continuing to compete at her age. “Exercise is the name of the game, Reed agreed.
