GEORGE — It's probably safe to say that most of the 7,000 people who, have registered for the 2008 St. George Marathon haven't met Carlene Garrick. However, nearly all of them have had contact with her at one time or another. That’s because Garrick is the administrative. professional who works with race director Kent Perkins. It's a position she has occupied for 21 years. This will be the 32nd running of the maraon. “I had had no experience with marathons whatever so I didn’t have a clue? Garrick said of the early years of doing her job. Her job involved a variety of other things — just as it does now — but now Garrick spends about 60 percent of her time throughout the year on the Marathon. “Its mostly marathon database, Garrick said of her job now. “Ten-year-club management, registration, the results booklet. I work with the chip timing people, anything that has to do with statistics. I work with the international runners, And it’s problem-solving” This year there will be runners from 13 nations, including the United States and, of course, Japan. That’s because St. George has a sister-city relationship with Ibegawa, Japan. Garrick smiled as she related a story requiring use of problem-solving. “We were on the bus at the starting line when this young man came up to me and asked, ‘do you have any running shoes? I forgot my running shoes?” she said. Garrick asked around. Bart Anderson, a noted city ambassador was on the bus and offered his shoes. “They werent the right size, but the young man took them. I later learned that he had finished the race. I don’t know what condition his feet were in? Rock Ballstaedt of Lehi is one person who has met Garrick through his membership in the 10-year-club. Actually he's ready to enter the 30-year-club when he finishes this race. “Kent and Carlene have done such a great job, Ballstaedt said. “Every year the marathon gets better and better? Perkins, the city’s Director of Leisure Services, said of Garrick, “Holy cow. I think of that song from “The Sound e See RACE on pg. 4 | About the cover Photo by Jud Burkett for St. George Neighborhoods Janalee Riley, ‘known as The House Nanny, sweeps up in the kitchen of a home she's house sitting in St. George.
