The office of ruling, feeding and governing the Universal Church, which has been committed to our lowliness by the eternal Prince of Pastors, imposes upon us the obligation of most diligently caring that all the Churches be provided with prelates who are able and willing properly to feed the flock of Christ. Since, therefore, the Cathedral Church of Salt Lake, which is a suffragan of the metropolitan Church of San Francisco, and of which the Right Reverend Joseph Sarsfield Glass of happy memory was the last Bishop, has through his death been deprived of its pastor of souls: we, desirous of providing properly for the said Church of Salt Lake and its flock, with the advice of our venerable brothers, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, by our apostolic authority choose you, the pastor of St. Lukes, New York, to preside over the vacant See of Salt Lake, and we appoint you its Bishop and Pastor, committing fully to you the care, government and administration of the Church of Salt Lake, in spirituals as well as temporals, with all the rights, privileges, duties and obligations appertaining to this pastoral office , We desire that your present office of pastor of St. Lukes Church, in the city of New York, cease by virtue of this appointment. We desire, likewise, that, after fulfilling the ' other things required by the law of the Church and before receiving Episcopal consecration, you make, in the presence of some Bishop enjoying the favor of the Holy See, a profession of the Catholic faith and take the customary oaths according to theirms herein contained. These forms, signed, and sealed by yourself and the aforesaid Bishop must be transmitted to the Apostolic Chancery within a period of six months. To the aforesaid Bishop by you selected, in our own name and in the name of the Roman Church we delegate the duty and obligation of receiving the profession of faith. Moreover, we reserve to ourselves and the Apostolic See the right of changing the limits of the said Diocese in the manner and at the time which may accord with our judg-meand that of the Apostolic See. We express the firm hope and confidence which we feel that, with the Divine assistance, the memorable Church of Salt Lake, under your pastoral care and fruitful zeal, will be wisely governed and will prosper and increase both materially and spiritually. Given at St. Peters, Rome, the twenty-firs- t day of June, in the year of our Lord, 1926, the fifth year of our pontificate. PETER CARDINAL GASPARRI, Secretary of State. nt , A The second letter of the Holy Father to Bishop Mitty, outlining the procedure to be in his consecration, runs thus: Pius, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God, to our beloved son, John J. Mitty, Bishop of Salt Lake, health and the apostolic benediction. We most lovingly grant to you, whom we have this day chosen as the Bishop of Salt Lake, the faculty of receiving Episcopal consecration at any place from any Bishop and two other assisting Bishops you may select, provided only that these three Bishops enjoy the favor and communion of the Apostolic See. We prescribe strictly, however, and command that you do not attempt to receive the aforesaid consecration and that no Bishop, selected by you and to whom we commit in our own name and in that of the Roman Church, the duty of undertaking these things, confer this office upon you until you have made a profession of faith and taken the customary oaths according to the forms herein contained.
