A St Jude Childrens Hospital team led by Dr. Robert Webster outlined the evidence in the September edition of the scientific journal Nature Medicine. Researchers traced the viruss lethal edge to a gene that carries instructions for assembling a protein the helped the virus evade two immune agents that are key to fighting viral infections. The resultingprotein included only one change from one produced by a less toxic flu virus. The flu strain killed six of the 18 individuals it infected. Webster, an internationally recognized flu researcher, said normally all 18 would be expected to survive. St Jude Children's Research Hospital is based in Memphis, Term. Writing in the same issue, Dr. Peter Palese of New Yorks Mount Sinai School of Medicine said the St Jude research suggestsanew target for drug development. It is a target with implications for other disease since flu isnt the only virus that possesses the same ability to outwit a portion ofthe immune system. Palese noted that report was also important because the 1997 flu is still cimilating among Hong Kongs wild birds and could resurface in humans.
