Hamlin's poll watchers may be first in Duchesne County By Susan Collier Duciusuie County Com mission can- didate Kim Hamlin enliated poll watchers duringthe primary election last week. It inny well have been the first time in tlie county's history that poll watchers have been used by a candidate to monitor election proceedings. Candidates have the right to have their representatives keep a lookout at polling location!, but they must notify the county when they intend to have poll watchers. Hamlin sent a letter to the county dated June 18 naming his representatives. "I am a candidate in the June 26, Primary Election for Duchesne County Commissioner. It is my understanding that within tha Republican by-lathat I am allowed to have a representative present at the individual pracincta during the voting procesa, tha count of ballots at tha individual precincts and at tha final count of total number of votes," hia letter atated. Poll watchers selected by Hamlin included: Vicky Bailey, Altamnnt; Florence Smith, Mountain Home; Shelly Brennan, Ducheane; Gayle Thomas, Fruitland; Carol Mnnncn, Myton; Joan Steed, Roosevelt; Connie Sweat, Tahiona; Rom Harry, Ncola; and Kyle Bailey and S!heriyPeal trass, relief representatives. Hamlin lost his bid to run in the general election for Duchesne County Commissioner when incumbentCom-missloner Larry Rom pulled in more than twice as many votes. According to Utah code, poll watch-- era basicallyjust watch aa voters file in and out. They can come and go as they bulcanldo anyUiingelse. Most Th importantly they cant harass voters. Duchesne County Clerk Auditor, Diane Fronton said she knows that othur counties have had poll watchers, but even long-tim- e Duchesne county employees couldn't recall a time when a candidate requested poll watchers. Poll watchers donteoxt the to:xpayers any money, and maintain their vigils solely at the request of candidate!. Uintah Basin Standard Inc.
