Come in and find out this National Library Week If you havent been into the Duchesne County Libraiyin Roosevelt or havent come into the Bookmobile Library Office lately, you might he surprised by what you can discover at your library. Patrons of the Duchesne County Library will notice that a new face has joined their ataiT. She is Pat Bird. Pat ia the newly hired Assistant Library Director and is a veteran of the Davis County Sheriffs Department. Library patrons in Duchesne County should be very excited about the new and improved state librarys pioneer site. This website now allows patrons to access Pioneer from home and local libraries. Some patrons may be asking what Pioneer is. Well, Pioneer, in short, is thousands of full-temagazine and newspaper articles that are available via the Internet. Patrons can log into Pioneer at http: pioneer.utah.gov. For home access contact a member of the library staff for the appropriate passwords or consult the April 2002 Library Bulletin. The Duchesne County Library in Roosevelt will soon undergo some physical chants in the not tnndistant future as well. The library will he between May painted and 20 and June 4. The biggest change for patrons of the Uintah Basin Bookmobile Library is that the Bookmobile Librarys collection has a new home at 130 S. Center Street in Duchesne and isopen 20-ye- ar xt to the public on Mondays from 3 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday to Thursday from 2 to4 p.m. Anotherchangeat the Uintah Basin Bookmobile Library is that online Internet access is now available to the public when they come into the Duchesne Office. Sue and Susan invite you to stop by any time they are in the office to browse their collection. Thisisjustahighlightofthechanges at Lhe Duchesne County Library and the Uintah Busin Bookmobile Library. Lets take a few minutes to talk about some services you may not real ize are available. The first is Loans. This service allows patrons to order in a book not available from our library. Once an order is placed it can lake anywhere from two to six weeks to arrive. There is a fee of $1.76 that covers the cost of mailing materials back to the lending library. This is a great way to access those Inter-Libra- ry hard-to-rea- titles. If you live in the Allumont and Tabiona area you may not be aware that you can access the libraries in your local schools free of charge. You may also not be aware that Duchesne County contributes a small amount of money yearly to those libraries. Another sen-icpatrons may not be aware of is Story Hour. They would also like to thunk their Patrons. Without these people library services in Duchesne County would not be makingthe great stride's Two weeks ago in this column I proposed that literature both gives and takes away. It provides us with wonderful maxims or precept s we are fond of quoting. Tlicn other authors comeakmgandcall those maxims into question. I suggested that literature engages in a healthy dialogue writh itself I that I raises more issues tha n it resolves. I should like in todays column to point out that this dialogue is not only between one author and another but also between individual authors and themselves. I will cite just one example. A favorite passage from Wordsworth for many of us is one fmi n his Intimations'ode. It reads in part, Our Birth is hut a sleep and a forget ting: The soul that rises with us, otir 1 ifes star, hath had elsewhere its set tingand conicth from afar.... We li red before we come here, Wordsworth Reems to affirm, ('or those of us who hold that idea as a tenet of our fail h, this passage is a most welcome witness to i tat effect, and we quote it often. What we never quote is a reference to this passage and poem in u letter Wordsworth wrote: I think it right to protest against a conclusion... that I meant to inculcate such a lielief. It is far too shadowy a notion to be recommended to faith, as more Hum tin element in our instincts of immortality. He then goes on to explain his reason for includingtlu; idea in the x xin : Having to wield some of the tsoftlie world ofhisown mind" when I was impelled to write this on the Immort alily of t lie Soul, fnem hold of the notion of as having sufficient foundation in humanity for authorizing me to make for my purpose the best useofit I could as a poet. (Quoted in Ernest Bembaunis Anthology of Romanticism.) Note that Wordsworth does not deny the possible troth ofthe concept. He just protests that he is not offering it as an article of faith hilt using it as a means of expressing a reeling lie wishes to convey. Literature, we need to be reminded, is not primarily a repository of mnxims. It is an evocation of life in all its richness and complexity.
