Some might disagree, but I figured seeing Michael Jordan was a bigger deal than checking out figure ska Michelle Kwan, Sara Hughes, USA; Irina Slutskaya, Russia and Fumie Suguri,Japan. However, all my carefully laid out plans Buffered a detour when it was announced in that Jordan was undergoing knee surgery. Those TV sports guys, who arent doctors said, Jordan Might Be Out For The Season!" I considered switching over to the Detroit-Uta- h game in that same week, but I decided a game program with a Jordan photo on the (hint would be better than checkingout Pistons, Jerry Stackhouse, Ben Wallace, Rick Barrys kid, etc. Although there is nothing wrong with motoring to town to see Pistons workingout at full force under rs, ry Karl Malone and John Stockton of e Utah Jazz are tops in this state eludingDuchesne County and West--n Uintah County, but Michael Jor-i- n is still the King of Hoops. Fans re cheeringhi every move back on arch 21 when his Washington Wiz-d- s were whipped by the Jazz in the elta Center. I had an appointment with a Salt ike City dentist where I hoped I ouldnt get slam dunked, and deled to combine Pain with Plea-ire- " (sometimes the Jazz have been e pain part) with my original plan ling a Detroit PistonaUtah Jazz intTst combo. That all changed when vas informed that Jordan was going be in town during the same week. All these plans had been made way ick in January. 1 didnt want the tin ofUtah Winter Olympic traffic in jbruary to put the drill to my teeth the basket (It turned out that the Pistons were really charged up. They pumped in hoops to beat the Jazz.) The sports news was better for Jordan Cans when his return was listed as looked good since tbe game was sched-ule- d for March 21. The Jordan Watch" was better when it was announced that he would practice with the Wizards at Denver prior to the Utah game. I-- W.V" vR,.;',: ; IAS guys are full of spaghetti. Jordan isnt going to practice and then sit and watch the game. Jordan ended up playing vs. Denver and then was set to be in town for the Jazz game. I went down to the tower section andwaitedtotakesome photos of Mr. Jordan. I guess he wanted to make a grand entrance because he took forever to come out onto the court for warmups. I snapped some photos among the mass of people, who kept bumpingshoulders in attempts to get in position for a Buper shot of Jordan. It was time to return to my seat and I waited Tor Jordan to make his basketball appearance and part the sea to the basket. However, I had to wait until he gotoffhisexercisebike before he starting pumping in buckets. Jordan played about half of the game, but half was better than none. He didnt really pump the hoop for points. He ended the contest-- a toss to 11 points. The fans the Jazz-wi- th weren't disappointed with many forgetting they were in the Utah home gym as they jumped up and down every time Jordan made a super play or scored a rare basket. Sadly, Jordan couldn't finish. It was time to rest his knee. He saton the floor and had his knee wrapped by some faithfiil hoop servant. I hope this isn't the last I see of Jordan. Im rooting for his knee to bounce back for a 2002-0- 3 NBA season. ' QmiiiiS Immediately Following m wn MMMoo (MliliiglliB 00 2 OPY1 Fieldsted, who is assisted by Cody Christensen, told his team the following: We can play better baseball, but we have got to practice. Only four of Unions 18 runs were earned. We made a tot of emirs. The Longhorns suited up 11 players for the Union game. However, they have a total of 17 players. They are: Tyson Iorg, Ryan Lindsay, Heston Farnsworth, Mike Bywater, Colton Burton, Casey Iorg, Jed Curry, Sam Williams, Shad Thayne, Bobby Mitchell, Daniel Bess, Aaron Hacker, Jace Jenkins, Shayne Lamb, Steven Stansfield, Jeff Stanley and Travis Maxfield. We have been trying to get going with a ball team for years. This season we had enough freshmen and mores who wanted to play to with four juniors and two 1 so we are fielding a team, Fieldsted said. His brotherJoe is the head coach at Union High. Coach Fieldsted added, We are trying to learn the fundamentals, and are doings tot of hitting, catchingand throwing. Wehave still been doing the basics of catching and throwing the ball. We have someyoungplayers who are working hard." Coaches throughout the world work on getting their players to develop soil hands to enable them to field the ball better and point out the need to use the top hand to ensure the ball doesnt become loose and so that the throwing hand is there to throw or flip the ball. A number of times, hard hands" by Altamont infielders resulted in balls bouncing ofT for errors and quick trips to first base by Union, and thus soft hands are a must. Altamont hands were better at picking up the ball vs. Rangely. The two primary skills for high school catchers are blocking and throwing effectively. These two skills take the longest to develop and thus more time is spent working on them. The basic process cue to blocking skills is: Glove to the ball --knees to the glove." 1 (Altamonts catcher, .4' j " "S PITCHING WOK Ryan Lindsay sends the baseball on a hot trip to home plate during a recent game. Heston Farnsworth, did a fine job behind the plate vs. Union.) A doubleplay is a major rally killer and getting the throw to the pivot man is most important From the moment the ball hits the pivot mans glove to the time it hits the first baseman's glove will decide if a team settles for one sure out or two with the super doubleplay. Another key defensive move is making sure that the first baseman can get to the bag without having to run and catch at the same time. When fielding a bunt the first baseman should always use two hands. In Altamont's win over Rangely, Farnsworth went 2 for 3 and By water pitched a complete game. Hacker belted out a two-rudouble.
