He has grown from a youthful 119 pounder to a seasoned record settingcollegiate champion. An early reminder of good mat things to come came when Sanderson 4 d won the year old boys division at the Amateur Athletic Union Grand Nationals over Ahmad Sanders of Flint, Mich., 11-back in July 1992. Cael waa always the toughest brother, but Cole and Cody Sanderson were good, too. Cael moves like a smaller guy, but is in a heavier class, Meacham remarked. Cael is really creative. The Cougars continued to have the Sanderson Wrestling Blues when Charley Jenkins had to settle for second place along with Meacham when he lost 3 to Caels older brother, Cody Sanderson. It was more Sanderson action for Jenkins when he lost to Cael in the clash for the 1996 state title at 145 pounds. Cael Sanderson suffered his third and final high school loss to Ohios Joseph Heskett in a 145 pound semifinal match at the 1996 Reno Tournament of Champions. Sanderson won the tourney in 1997 and added his fourth state championship plus finished undefeated as a 171 pounder. Heskett and Sanderson are now teammates at Iowa State. Heskett won the national title this year at 165 pounds. Heskett beat Sanderson at the University Nationals during their freshman year when they were sitting out as redshirta and wrestling unattached.
