Thie is the highest median household income the state has ever had, even after adjustingfor inflation. It ranks Utah .eighth in the nation and 114 percent of the national median household income of 39,657,"stated Michael Christensen, executive director if Utah Foundation, a private public research agency in issuing its itest report. Household income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in Utah. The reason for Utah's high rank-i- n g is the result oft he ctrong economy the state has experienced over the last doxen years. Though the national economy has been strong, Utahs has been stronger. Utah's annua job growth has beenone of the best in the nation for a decade and it unemployment rate has been one ofthe lowest on the nation. The United States BurcauofCen-su- s released the data from an annual survey it conducts of about 50,000 households across the nation. The Bureau uses three-yea- r averages when comparing states to reduce the statistical error that results from annual estimates. "Another measure of how well Utah's economy has been doing is the poverty rate. Utah's 1997-9- 8 three year average rate is 7.9't, ran king the state second in the nation. Only Mary-- 1 land has a lower poverty rate than does Utah, states Christensen. The national poverty rate for the three-yeaverage waa 12.6percent. Poverty in the United States has been declining from a relatively high level of 15.1 percent in 1993 to 11.8 percent in 1999. The sustained economic growth for the nineties has provided opportunities for millions of Americans to rise above the poverty level, even if marginally ao. "Of all poor persons, the hugest percentage were those between the ages of 4. Among this age group there were 16.9 million poor, accounting for 52.6 percent of all poor. Children under the age of ISmakeup the second largest group. There were 112.1 million poor children or 37.5 percent ofall poor, the report states. Regarding health insurance coverage, Christensen states, "The percent of people without health insurance for the three-yea- r moving average in Utah waa 13.8 percent This is below the national average of 16.0 percent but only ranked Utah in the come for incomes above the national average. middle of the states at 24" in the nation. Tha Bureau of Census estimates that about 305,0100 Utahns did not have health insurance coverage in 1999. Despite the good times for Utah, for the last three yean the numberof uninsured Utahns has increased. By comparison, UA averages show a decline in the number of uninsured. The report concludes, Unfortunately the percent ofUtah's population that is without health insurance has not followed the positive trends of income and poverty ." "Asa region, the West ranked quite favorable in median household income. In order, Colorado, Washington, Utah, California, Nevada and Oregon a'l had median household contrast Ariiona ranked By 34, Wyoming ranked 35, and Idaho 36. There is no tree entry fee, and when the even tie concluded, you can take your tree home. Kriasman did add that in past yean there have been some who have graciously insisted that the tree be accepted as a donation, to be auctioned ofT during the event, to farther increase the funding effort. He said plans for improvement call for a committee to be formed to work with principals and teachers to find through research. At the secondary level there are already monthly meetings with department heads and curriculum discussions. Weve really focused on our secondary and we've seen improvement. Maybe we've neglected our elementary, said Aland, noting that education depends not only on good teaching in the classroom, but on support and teaching at borne. According to school district officials, scores were impeded this year by a new nils which mandates that all students take the test, when before students in Resource and Engl is has a second language classes had beeo ex- empt. In a lot of cases, its good for us to have the test data on the students so we can see how they are doing, but H dors pull the test scores down from where they used to be, said Roosevelt Middle School Principal Dennis Manning.
