November 30. 1999- - Page l7 Win By 50 boys whip brand new team, Lady Eagles lose close game DHS By Alda Rachel Duchesne High School opened the basketball season with their Male Eagles crushing Juan Diego, a new Utah Catholic school, Wednesday, in its first ever game, and its Lady Eagles dropping a contest to South Summit, Tues89-3- 61-5- 4 day at Duchesne. For Juan Diego its baptism into high school basketball was almost a drowning with the Eagles taking a 25-- 9 lead after one quarter and scorhalftime ing 31 more for a 56-1- 8 edge. Duchesne scored only 17 points in the third quarter as they emptied its bench, but Juan Diego didn't convert the opportunity into points due to scoring only eight to fall behind 73-2Juan Diego had its best quarter at the end with 13. However, Duchesne pumped in 16 to win by 50. Cris Hoopes was the top Eagle scorer erith 17 points-a- ll in the first half. Kirk Grant added 16 and Shaun Mullins 13. Lindsay and Allen added ten each. Also scoring for Duchesne were: Q. Grant, 6; Bird, 3; Moon, 3; Brown, 2 and Stansfidd, 1. Lindsay had two and Moon, Grant one each. Duchesne fired in 39 field goals and was 7 for 15 fibm the foul line. Juan three-pointe- MY WAY-Uni- on basketball coach Jeff Hanke demonstrates the way he wants a passing drill to be run. Hanke's Union Cougar team placed sixth at the state meet last year, and hope to do well this season as well. Hanke is a former Altamont High School hoop star. The Salt Lake City area school converted 5 out of 14 free throws, and tossed in 16 field goals. South Summit's Lady Wildcats grabbed a 15-1- 1 first quarter lead, and owned a 31-2- 3 edge at the half The Wildcats owned a 46-3- 3 advantage after three quarters and withstood a 2 t charge by Duchesne in the final eight minutes to win by seven. Kara Jo Skewes was the top Lady Eagles with 18 points and Jennifer Nielsen fallowed with 16. Tiffany Ivie added 10. Also scoring were: Johanna Wight, 5; Jennifer Ivie, 2; Tiffany Lewis, 2; Amy Bleasaid, 1. Skewes fired in three and Wight had one. Duchesne fired in 22 field goals and was 6 for 14 from the foul line. South Summit tossed in 20 field goals and hit 21 out of 40 free throws. Starting for Duchesne were seniors, Skewes, Bleasard; juniors, Nielsen, T. Ivie and Wight Ivie led the Duchesne team with six steals. Wight had six assists. According to Eagle fan. Sue Wight Tiffany Ivie flew through the air like superman (shouldn't it be supergirl) to break up a South Summit play. Two plays later Skewes fired the ball through the net for a three pointer to bring Duchesne within three at 23-2Wight passed the ball to Nielsen, who scored to bring Duchesne within three once again at 25-2Wight left the game due to foul trouble and took a seat on the bench. Lewis fouled out in the fourth quarter Katti Robtnson stole the ball and threw it down court toT. Ivie. Wight whooshed a three painter and scored two mors paints on another basket. She then fouled out a little bit later. which fired up the team. Nielsen made two, and Duchesne battled back in the game. Skewes snared a rebound, made two points and followed up with a successful free throw. Skewes connected on her with 30 seconds to third 0. go. Duchesne's boys will host Gran tsville, Friday. December 3 and will compete in the Millard TournaDuchesnes ment, December girls will take on Intrrmoutain Christian. Tuesday, November 30 and will face the Lady Braves at North Summit, December 7. 10-1- Tabiona Tigers earn double home game wins ByAldon Rachel Tabiona High Schools hoop team hit the jackpot and they didnt have to go to Las Vegas they just stayed hams with the Male Tigers crushing Intermountain Christian. Tuesday and the Lady Tigers 73-4- 9, knocking off Mt. Vernon, The Male Tigers led 24-1- 4 after one quarter and 41-2- 0 at the half behind a 17-- 6 outsconng of ICS. Tabiona took a 55-3- 1 edge into the fourth quarter where they scored 18 more for a triumph. Shay Bagley bagged top scoring honors with 25 points. Jeremy Curry added 13 and Rhoades pumped in 12. Also scoring for Tabiona were R. Bagley, 8; Ginea, 7; Park, 4; Bell, 3 and Sweat, 1. Gines and Bell rang each.
