East PTA worried over street safety at school little children are not being seen, said Drinda Jensen, East's PTA By Cheryl Meeham East Elementarys PTA has organized volunteer crossing guards to help children cross the road in front of the school, and they are drafting a plan for a drop-of- f route to present to Duchesne County School Board members in an effort to keep kids safe. Its an ongoing problem. Ifteachers walking across the road almost adult get hit and they're a full-siz- e and theyVe not being seen, you know safety commissioner. Safety problems, Jensen feels, stem from added traffic and kids darting in and out of the parked cars alongside the road near the intersection of 700 East and 400 North. And while measures such as no parking zones, crosswalks and expanded parking in the rear of the school have been made, safety problems have not gone away. The added traffic has been caused at Myton DINNER PLUS MATH EQUALS-Vio- la Martinez, a The students math dinner a works on project. According Carol Parrish, East Elementary has prompted principal, as many as 20 to 30 parents to transport their children in the mornings. "Its really caused a snag out front I cringe when I see how unsafe it is. Parrish said. The PTA is also drafting a plan to present to Duchesne County School Board asking for a circular dropnoff route off of 700 East to keep children away from the busy intersection. We're sketching out ideas now. We're thinking of a horseshoe loop with extended parking on the southeast side of the school playground since East doesn't frilly utilize their playground, Jensen said. Parrish says she fully supports the PTA in their efforts, noting, Tve talked to the superintendent about it, but we need something in writing. This is all very preliminary. Everything must be approved through the Department of Risk Management. We want all the ts crossed and Trthe ftrdofted before we go to the . school board, said Jensen; .adding, until other safety measures are ' taken the volunteer crossing guards will be in place to ensure children's safety.
