Remember her and smile! 1 Did You Know? )MW . i Just as the vast majority of human beings tend to outgrow the clothes they wore in high school as they mature from students into adults, landscaping also tends to outgrow its petite younger years. Some plants grow larger than expected, while others may die. And 10 years later, landscapes may be more unrecognizable than Carbon County residents are in high school graduation pictures. or A make-ovmay be in order to improve the situation and revitalize the grounds around private residences. Tbo often, people assume that trees, shrubs and perennials will live forever. It is a false notion that once the trees, shrubs and perennials are planted and established, people have to leave them alone. Usually during (he first five years, plants grow and fill in their designated area. From years five to 10, the area looks great. From 10 years on, though, many plants start to outgrow the area and begin to look cluttered, overgrown and messy. Eventually, parts of the landscape will need to be replaced. is that the whole landscape The advantage of be to need does not replaced - it may just need some fine usually tuning. Plants may have died or trees have turned sunny areas into deep shade. Carbon County residents should consider the following suggestions for a landscape facelift. Avoid crowding. Crowding is the most common problem with older landscapes. When plants were first brought home in gallon containers, they looked small next to the house. Because of looking small, often they were planted too close together to make the landscape look full. As the years passed, however, the plants grew and matured. Eventually, the plants may have crowded each other, the house, the lawn and even the neighbors yard. Identify the plants that have reached a desirable size or are just starting to mature and look acceptable. These plants can become the focal point of the landscape, and the large, overgrown plants can slowly be removed. Come up with a plan to remove the older, unsightly plants and replace them with new ones. It may take anywhere from one to five years to renew the landscape and gradually eliminate the older plants. Some of the new varieties currently available in nurseries may be more attractive in the landscape or need less maintenance and care than what you currently have planted. This is a good time of year to visit the local nurseries and ask a certified nurseryman about options and new plants that may be available in the spring. Develop landscaping ideas and put them on paper to form a landscape master plan. Gather ideas from gardening magazines, catalogues and books. Then decide which plants are worth keeping and which need to be removed in the coming years. Dont forget to include the lawn as part of the landscape masterplan. Remember to apply a winterizing fertilizer in the fall. Snow and rain help move the nutrients into the soil while the roots are still active enough to absorb and store them until spring. Applying a winterizing fertilizer in the fall should insure green grass early in the spring. Completing the winterizing application during the fall will probably eliminate the need for local residents to fertilize the lawns again until May. ceive their original a (Cohen) Layne, popular ventriloquist of Ed Sullivan fame, in 1946 and settled in Northridge, Like Treasury bills, notes and bonds, U.S. savings bonds can help keep invested funds -- Monument She was born Oct 22, 1922 in Emery, and grew up with her brother, Tkny, and sister, Phyllis, in Price. With TIPS, invetors pay taxes on inflation adjusted gains before they receive their inflation adjustments to principal at maturity. Residents in the Castle Valley area may be able to alleviate the problem by investing in reTIPS through a tirement savings account, such as an individual retirement account (IRA). Using the strategy means people dont pay taxes on earnings until after they start withdrawing funds from their -- curity. The majority of economists agree that businesses do not actually pay taxes. Businesses collect taxes and pass the costs on to customers in the form of higher prices, to workers in the form of lower wages or to shareholders in the form of lower profits. If the portion of state and local taxes paid by businesses were passed cm to households, the state and load portion of the Utah familys burden would be four percentage points higher, raising it to 32 percent Since state and local taxes tend to be regressive, a disproportionate share of the increase would be borne by lower income households. Some financial analysts, believe that if the hidden taxes that result from federal business taxes were added to the state and local hidden taxes, the Utah family tax burden more of total would jump from 32 percent tq 35 percent or ' associations the concluded study. income, ceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Chester A.
