Show rwvvouonv Sun Advocate Price, Utah Tuesday September 17, 2002 7A 1 Placing safety first at. Halloween : i Halloween is favorite holiday for children, but theyre thinking about costumes and candy and fun with their friends. Safety is the last thing on childrens minds, so parents and motorists need to. to be especially alert. Although the holiday is over a month away, children already for the big night as costumes begin to line the isles of Iirepare stores. When assisting children with planning a Hal loweeo event, parents must remember that sometimes parties turn into more than just fun and games. In fact, as children become older, the oportunities arise to participate in activities such as parties which offer alcohol. With a little education and plenty of support, children can avoid situations such as these. 'Involve school organizations such as the PTA to spread the word about the dangers of underage drinking. If no sucn support is available, parents must discuss the situation with their children before it is too late. Halloween is the first of many holidays that is rapidly approaching which may lead to parties with alcohol being served. By discussing the situation with children before an event happens, the child is more prone to say no or use caution if a situa- turn arises. Parents could ask merchants to avoid selling alcoholic merchandise, which displays Halloween symbols to promote sales. By doing so, merchants may help promote safe holiday activities for young adults. Halloween has become an adult holiday, too, and alcohol consumption is high. Avoid driving while intoxicated. Not only does the driver put themself in harms way, but they also jeapordize who line the streets during the lives of the many the Halloween holiday.
