Paying children an allowance gives youth the opportunity to learn about money management should consider the following suggestions. Adults should decide whether they want to tie allowance to chores. The practice works well for some families, but not for others. Some children are not money motivated. And if the youth do not need money at the moment, they simply dont do assigned chores. If adults opt not to tie chores to money, it may be helpful to think of the family as a business, with parents as the owners and children as the employees. If children fail to do their share of the work, the youth lose privileges instead of money. For example, children cannot play or watch television until their assigned tasks are completed. Or or an older yout cannot borrow the car for a set period of time. Parents who choose to tie chores to money can also provide the opportunity for overtime by listing additional household tasks the children can do to earn extracash. Allow children manage their own money. Many parents do not want to give children money and, therefore, do not provide youth with an allowance. However, when asked if they pay for childrens activities, the parents usually an- swer in the affirmative. This teaches children that they can get money whenever they want it. Giving youth a set allowance on a weekly or monthly basis provides children with an oppor- tunity to manage their own money. The practice also teaches youth that parents are not a cash cow. Start providing an allowance when children are young. Youngsters can start receiving an allowance at the age of 5 or 6 years old. At die recommended age, the children are learning about money in school and are beginning to understand the concept of buying things. An easy way to teach children to budget is to pay the allowance in small bills or coins. Help youth et a bank that has different sections or place the money in small jars or hews. I Label one erf the container for spending, one for savings and possibly one for charity. ' The savings container can.be divided into short-ter- m and longterm compartments. , Tkach youngsters how to divide the allowances intothe sections. By doing this, children trill learn the methods of budgeting. Do not automatically jurop in to respue children ifthe youpi make poor financial choices. If children receive an allow- ance at the beginning of the month end spend the money mediately, avoid bailing the youth out at the end of the month when they want cash. If children get invited movie with friends and dont haje the money to pay for the activity, parents should indicate thpy while pointing but that the yoilSh chose to spend the cash earlietTn the month or week. Children will soon learn tHht spending all their money at tfce (Continued on page 3$) STfuMlJv Ray and Lois Tblarole Sarah Irene Rowley Bryan John Ellis would like to thank all our family, friends and Heirloom Inn for their presence at our beau & Golden Wedding Anniversary celetyatii and far the many lovely cards, gifts and fif J September 7ft. 2002 soap or salad , When considering pictures for publication in the Sun ments, avoid photographs cluding anyone other than the bride and the groom.
