Show | Tyee exposures are carcinogenic after extended exposure. This increase in suspended radioactive particulates and chemical emissions associated with mill operation greatly impacts the region. Just how much radon escapes from the present material is anybody’s guess. It’s likely many times that of the natural background. Does the fallout far exceed the normal background radiation? Has the background radiation varied or increased since past checks? No wonder that Blanding, only five miles from the mill site, yearly experiences a continuing population decline. Under these circumstances no one would feel safe living within five miles of a hazardous dump. Few would select Blanding as a retirement center. What are we to do about it? We need to get the homeland security people involved. Emergency preparedness and quality oversight must be done. However, this doesn’t mean merely the sealing of our homes and hogans with duct tape and plastic. We need to know at what point the people need to be sheltered or evacuated. We need to demand that environmental regulations are enforced. We must tend immediately to our health needs and to press for health and epidemiological studies. We need to treat those already affected. We need to survey the entire region and look for "hot spot" of fallout contamination. Sample stations should be set up all across the Colorado Plateau...Wildlife Resources must immediately check the condition of the deer herds, the wild rabbits, the horses and cattle and other animals. They need to verify whether harm came to them by their eating vegetation from polluted lands and drinking from the waterways and springs. The purity of the water supply for human consumption must certainly be monitored. We must insist that a new EIS be prepared. Conditions are vastly different today than in 1979. No EIS has ever been prepared to handle the importation of the deadly material from Tonawanda and elsewhere. None at all. I believe this a crime of monumental proportions. We must see to it that hazardous wastes are not placed in areas such as White Mesa, that take advantage of low-income peoples living under poverty conditions. This is aboriginal land, long held sacred. Indeed, Norman Begay, a leader among the Ute Indians, told me before his death that the dump had been built in the area of an We're now "Above the crowds" RE/MAX CANYONLANDS REALTY 131 N. International Uranium Corporation, the owner of the dumping site, must assume the burden of all costs associated with the import and storage of the material. It is also the responsibility of the local, the state and the federal government who issued permits and licenses to the company. Cleanup must begin immediately.
