Show FELDBACK A Wisconsin View of Changing Moab Dear Jim, After reading the latest Zephyr, here are some rambling observations from northern Wisconsin. We first visited Moab in the late 80's in June. We loved not only the wilderness but also the small town atmosphere of Moab. Having not seen all that we wanted, we returned exactly two years later. The wilderness was the same, but Moab had changed noticeably. It was busier, noisier, more developed, more urban. Our first visit was the best and the The Readers Respond Plenty of Blame to Go Around... Editor, ‘ I am a resident of Ogden Utah (an outsider to Moab) and have been making regular treks to the Moab area since the mid 80’s enjoying the natural beauty and limitless recreation possibilities. | have watched the growth of this recreational Mecca with sadness and have finally made the decision to avoid Moab altogether when planning my running or cycling adventures. The crowds and the assault of the Non-elitist rich weasel developers are more than I care to endure. By this I mean to say that the development of Cloudrock does not disturb me as much as the opinions of those who are indirectly responsible for creating a desire for this development in the first place. All of the quaint little shop owners who promote their business claiming to have only the interests of the community in mind have painted a picture for the entire world to see and eventually desire to be a part of. I was shocked to hear someone refer to Tom Arnold’s collection of automobiles a museum as "an American Classic." Old Volkswagens may be cool but they are not exempt from leaking oil and other - hazardous chemicals into the environment. I don’t agree with the development of Cloudrock any more than the residents of Moab but I believe credit should be given where credit is due. Thank you to everyone that has ever advertised or promoted the wonders of the Moab region for paving a road for the second probably the last even though we have yet to experience all that we would like to. You see, we like Moab enough to stay away so we won't contribute to its demise. Here at home, we are experiencing the same type of recreational growth fueled by new wealth. Our family has had a small vacation cabin on a small northern lake in "Wisconsin‘s Last Wilderness" for over 40 years. More people have discovered this haven of quiet and solitude just as we "discovered" Moab. Five thousand square foot homes are being built on the small lakes and wooded lots. Personal water craft and huge boats race over the lakes. New residents complain about the one or two junked cars and weed filled town lots. They want the area to look like the suburb they left behind. They come to escape urban life only. to bring it with them up north. Hold on to what you have in Moab as long as you can! I'd like to say that the next time I’m in town, I'll look you up and buy you a cold one. However, we probably won’t be back; not because we don’t love the area, but because we do. Keep things stirred up. Sherm Beye Wisconsin (if you're hurting for a letter to publish, go ahead and use this one) "ULTRA ELITIST RICH WEASEL DEVELOPERS" to travel. Again I am an outsider so my KKK in Moab? Nope...those are our ‘friends.’ opinion is drawn from that perspective. I suppose ifI were a transplant to the area as nearly all who live in Moab are, I may see things differently. Dear Jim I am Regards, _ Scott Estes writing to voice concern and skulking away into the night. The cowardly then a KKK member. Ogden, Utah over the anonymous letter sent out in Dec 2000 supposedly by your friends to businesses that advertise in the ZEPHYR. In reality the letter was akin to some creep in a white robe and hood setting fire to a cross on your front lawn difference is the letter writer was even more At least the KKK are willing to be identified--as a group if not by name. Middle Eastern and R.A. terrorists, at least by group, also take or claim responsibility for their cowardice. A British Perspective Hiya, My family and I travelled around California, Arizona and Utah last Spring...trying to promote our records... We liked Moab and the desert; it’s very different from where we‘re at here in London. We visited Rainbow Bridge only to feel sad at what the white man has done (old story I know). We read an issue of The Zephyr, cool publication. There was a campaign to drain Lake Powell--I was wondering where that’s at... if you have any info... There is nowhere to get your thing together over here in England, no room.... I’m waiting The author or authors of this financial act of terrorism (which is what the letter truly was) don’t have the courage of their convictions to sign or stand behind their true feelings. To steal a phrase, the letter read like a letter from Tarzan to Cheetah and the true ignorance of the author or authors was apparent even though the tirade was dumbed down to hide their identity. Only COWARDS need to hide. Iam concerned because the writer or writers of this stupid malicious attempt to harm your advertising base are really sending a message far more damaging than you coming for the day that this island sinks !!! out against Cloud Rock or praising Moab’s junkyards is to our community. That message: There is a cowardly group of people here who would damage a free press and only allow Keep on keeping on... Jules Great Britain their " ideals" to be heard and considered. Who are the true enemies of progress? I submit it is small minded cowards such as those people. Who are the enemies of promoting a friendly community to the outside investor? I again submit it is the cowardly authors of such deviously contrived means of If you can’t “get your thing together” over there, you can at least try here at: www.glencanyon.org robbing the community of a free press. If they succeed in harming you and the ZEPHYR who will be next? Wake up Moab and think about it.
