Show the city dump but we had to stay. Ralph cooked potatoes over a bonfire and we boiled eggs and coffee on the sterno —so we had a fine supper by candlelight as we lost the lantern off. The N.Y. boys pulled in late as they had bad tire trouble. Sprinkled as we were getting off to bed. Left camp at 6:30 AM. Stopped in town to get gas, air & eats. 43 miles to Wamsutta after which they tell us we'll get into bad roads--sand. I see now we have gone around Long's Peak and are west of it this morn. Sagebrush & rocks & hills. Good roads for a long way then we got to the bad grade —dust ruts made travel slow. Went thro’ Red Desert which is not so bad as I expected from the named. We got so tired of the great close up under them. I would surely the time. Ate our dinner on the road name. We'll never forget “Point of Rocks” —well cliffs of bare rock —a coal mining camp was right get tired of having them stare and glare at me all before coming to Point o' Rocks. An air plane flew over as we ate. Saw more oil wells. Was glad to go thro’ Rock Springs and see where they are mining coal —came on to Green River 15 miles further and camped all alone on a slope just outside across the river. Tuesday morn, July 12. Mosquitoes put a stop to my writing last night —tho’ the breeze kept them off mostly. Ralph shaved and did some work on car this morn so it was 8:35 when we got off. After we got packed up we saw the ground was fairly moving with little green worms —sun must have bro't them out as we only saw a few before. 28 miles was too early. Stopped to get gas & water and eats. Out of Evanston we drop & drop & drop. Crossed Wyoming-Utah line just at 4 P.M. Country looks pretty —so much greenness. 16 miles out we met a genuine flock of sheep —the herder said there were 1832 old sheep and about 1600 lambs. They stirred up some dust in the soft dirt —but glad we saw the sight. See many sheep now and hear them on the mts. Coalville about 7:30. Crossed the river and had to turn around and go back to campgrounds. The grounds are prettiest we've had but nothing else. Several other campers. Have coal for us here. We made a smudge for mosquitoes. They didn’t bother us much. Cold before morning. Cooked potatoes and heated water on the fire. Fried bacon & eggs and made _ coffee on Sterno. Cleaned ourselves up good and left at 9:10. Half our trip is done as we've from there to Los Angeles. Took one of the mts. Ate our lunch supplies Salt Lake City. Coming a swell view of the city-could make out the Capitol building. Looked up Ray's [Ella’s brother] address the first thing—got in about 2 P.M. Myra had us all come in —we rested and washed. Ray came soon from the hospital where he manages the laundry. Sure good to see them. After supper Ray took us for a drive over the city and then —oh boy a really bed to sleep in till morning. (ABOVE) now to Granger. We are winding up and up again. Railroad is up here too. Sure get good views. Now comes Granger and we dropped, dropped down. Gas is 40 cents here —didn’t need any so we went on. 14 miles out is a magnificent mount of rock beautifully carved without the first sign of vegetation. Took a picture of it. It is getting hot but a good breeze. One place before Granger the road wound like a snake at edge of high cliff. Just room for road —then deep gorge. It is now 11:30 and we are 37 miles from Evanston. Phil and Donna had short naps. How things can change in. an hour here. When we got some dozen miles from Granger we saw an irrigated flat with a few horses, then farther on more irrigation, real genuine trees, fences, farms and then Lyman town where we mailed a letter to Nash's. Here are pretty fields (small) of alfalfa, oats, wheat, gardens, silos, and best of all, trees. Here we were just speaking of getting near some trees to eat lunch when Helen said “Looky ahead”. There sat those self same N.Y. boys eating their lunch. Hadn’t seen them since Rawlins so their eyes popped out as bad as ours did. Here we see the first rural mail boxes we've seen. After Lyman, beautiful made 866 mi. It is some 50 miles to Salt Lake and 800 several pictures as we went along —one at the spring & beside the stream after passing the big reservoir that thro’ Parley Canyon--many beautiful views. One gave us Pt L) THE MAIN ROAD in Wyoming THE BOYS from New York (R) CHEYENNE. WYOMING - Ray tried to get a day off but couldn't, so after running out to the hospital we left the _ city about 10:30. Paved roads clear to Provo —44 miles— then pavement and crushed rock roads to Nephi, another 44 miles. Ate lunch just out of Provo. It was getting real hot, but a shower and clouds soon cooled us off. See corn and other grain now. After Nephi —66 miles— is Fillmore where we want to camp. We turn our watches back here so we have a long day. Saw the big U.B. Dam. Got into Fillmore and bo't grub then on to camp. Camp is in courthouse yard and pretty wet but we ate good, slept good and on the road at 7 A.M. Coming thro’ Parley Cany on --many beautiful views. One gave us a swell view of the city--could make out the Capitol building...Looked up Ray's address first thing... oh boy a really bed to sleep in till morning. irrigated valley. Surely a feast for sore eyes after riding over 175 miles of wilderness. 28 miles now to Granger. We are winding up and up again. Railroad is here too. Sure get good views. Gas is 40 cents here---didn't need any so we drove on Going from here in company with another car. One other man was coming too, but his Ford couldn't crank. These other folks are from Minot N.D. and camped over one Sunday in Central City [Nebraska]. We came to an Indian fort, “Cove Fort”, 34 miles out. Next came the “Dug Ways” with short curves and up, up, up. Rained a little just before we came to Beaver so we drew up under some trees and ate lunch-then bot supplies and on to Cedar City. These are all Mormon towns, fields are irrigated and along here we saw such fine fields of oats, barley, alfalfa, etc. It was some 16 miles out of Beaver we Our road led up over a winding road and looking down in the valley was a great view with snow capped mts. in the extreme background. Now at 1 P.M. we have 121 mi. to Salt Lake. Plenty of sagebrush but these mts. are covered with vegetation and we see some irrigated flats —two pretty streams too. We got out at one, picked some pretty yellow flowers and filled water bottle. Sure was pretty with its pebble bottom. See quite a bit of greenness and for quite a distance the road follows the railroad thro’ a winding valley--where the green grass & cattle & springs make a pretty sight. Quite cool and showers on us every now and then. We climb & climb all to no avail as when we get clear up then comes drop, drop, drop and down we go, sometimes pretty steep. Saw some deserted oil wells and old shacks--somebody’s air castle went a glimmering. Also see old coal mining camps. 2:45 and we've only made 86 miles today. At Evanston on the Great Bear river they had such a pretty campground we wished we could stop, but it had our first tire trouble —a tack mun in front left tire. This made 1150 miles without any trouble. Came to a flowing well where we drank & took picture. Floods thro’ here made some bad washes. Got into Cedar City about 4 P.M. They are fixing nice camping grounds. There are eleven booths where climbing vines are started--we ate our supper in one. Children paddled in the water and made mud pies with Frederick and Leora. Bud & Helen took shower baths even if water was cold. Some dozen cars camped here. Sure will be pretty grounds later. We had fried potatoes, coffee, beans & salmon for supper. This town is about half of Central City and has seven garages —no Rail Roads here. Got to bed early but there were those who visited.
