andaas was in the act of waiting upon customers when stricken at first it that he had fallen in a stroke ot of epilepsy to which hf he was sub subject eject and after toppling over behind the counter customers in the store atthe time and passersby who became acquainted with what had happened carried him out into the room and laid him prone upon the floor A doctor was sent tor for and in the mean time methods ot of inducing respiration were applied in the hope that he would revive when the physician arrived there was very little pulse altho mr boc be appeared appe ared to be breathing the entire machinery of 0 the body suddenly came to toa a stop and tile the life of mr box bo was wad at an end tile the sudden calling of E U A box takes from tills this community a man who its has been very active in the affairs of bri brigham ham city since the city was I 1 founded almost in a i religious way and as an educator lie he was one of the leading men in the community during the ilie early years of the cites history and lie he also played an important part in the social life of the town in fact there were ware very few projects inaugurated with which he did not have something to do and his life was a busy one for years lie he w was s tile the schoolmaster of the village and at the same time I 1 lie he was one of the leading spirits in the home dramatic company which supplied the major portion of the en givens ike town was a s a it il ero ot tt lie stal cid ey cy al also and that required of him much ume time arid and labor ina in a capacity all of which so occupied his time that lie ha had none to waste in his later years lie he has been a hard worker along other limesand lines line sand and lie he was never idle he was v as called cabied in in the midst of lifes acrivi ties for lie he had attended the afternoon session of the scandinavian conference and in the evening relieved his son at the store where he was serving when the silent reaper gathered him home elijah A box was born in nauvoo ill january ath 1844 after the martyrdom of joseph arid and hyrum smith his parents moved to st louis and remained a few years then they moved to council bluffs where they remained tour hearse years making preparations to come to the valleys in the spring of 1852 the family started on oil the long journey across the plains in company with a large number of others and they arrived in salt lake late in the summer they resided in salt lake three years and came to brigham in 1855 which has been the home of the subject of this sketch ever since he was one of the pioneers of this community and had a very comprehend sive understanding ft the growth and development which this city has made since his arrival here in 1866 on may ath ho he was married to roxcy A snow daughter of president lorenzo snow and many years later he took another wife in the person of juss alss sarah hadley botham both bt whom survive hinr him he had a great desire to gain knowledge and to that end entered the school taught taugh by prof E L F fa in 1870 tho the he was a young manof manof twenty soven seven summers ana and hada had a wife and two children in april 1871 he was called to perform a mission to great britain and left for that land in company with ala a large rg number 0 of o other missionaries I 1 in n clay ot of the same I 1 year lie ile spent two years in that ber vice and returned home in the autumn of 1873 ile ho immediately moved to ogden where he engaged in sebooh teaching tor for a year hearthen came back to brigham and became the local school position he occupied for many years mr box probably enjoyed the distinction of having taught school more years in tills illis c community 0 than aur any other teacher when the mutual improvement association was organized mr box was appointed president continuing in that position until the city citi was d divided in to wards when he beca became nie president ot of the second ward association continued from first page and served in that capacity for about ten years he was superintendent of the sunday school in the first ward ivard tor for a number of years and has been een a sunday school worker all his life ite either as an officer teacher or member he was also one of those who suffered imprisonment in the state penitentiary for conscience sake for many years mr air box conducted a L fruit shipping establishment and engaged in other business ventures he was a member of the martial band and a member of the home dramatic company in a civic way he served as councilman in early days was elected county assessor in 1902 and reelected elected re in 1804 1904 he only served six months of the second term resigning the position to accept that of deputy state auditor under J A edwards mr box was a man of well defined principles and never hesitated when the people divided on party lines he aligned himself with the republican party to which lie he has given his best efforts his life has been one of hard work over a road that has not always been smooth time wrought its influence upon him and the release while it alafe dudda raid and was a shock to his family and friends is undoubtedly sweet and accept acceptable abig to bilm he leaves two wo wives five daughters one son and a number ot of grand children to mourn his loss besides a host ua of friends funeral services were held wednesday at 1 in the second ward chapel and during the services all business houses closed as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased bishop blackburn was in charge of the services and the speakers were the bishop pres L A snow john F Al merrill errill patriarch E P cordon of willard president oleen N stohl etolil patriarch wm horsley and C holst hoist all spoke of the virtues of the deceased and related incidents of his life which had impressed them the musical numbers were the hymns aay al Y father knows and 0 my aly father by the choir and solos by mrs 0 C jacobsen and victor E madsen who sang calvary and 1 I know that my aly redeemer lives respectively tile the prayers were offered by bishop D P burt and elder john D peters there was an abundance of 0 flowers in
