Show SELECT CANDIDATE PARKER AND davas NAMED BY DEMOCRATS new york and west V rg n a furnish democrat standard bearers both be ng selected upon first ballot the national democratic conven alon Is now a matter of history and the dele geates are wending their way homeward judge alton parl er of new bork was nominated tor president and henry da vis of west virginia for vice president both being selected on the first ballot the official ballot for president resulted as follows parker hearst votes for other candi dates were cockrell 42 ainey 38 wall 27 gray 12 wll lams 8 pat tison 4 mcclellan 3 miles 3 coler 1 morgan 2 utah cast her entire six votes tor parker while idaho and nevada cast six each for hearst montana s six totes went to parker while wyoming supported hearst colorado cast tour for parker and five for hearst the nominees tor vice president were davis of west virginia james R williams of illinois ex senator george turner of washington and ex senator gilham A harris of kan the vote resulted davis wll llama turner harris 58 utah idaho montana oregon and washington cast their votes for tur ner while wyoming supported davis and colorado cast seven votes tor turner and three for williams judge parker received the news of his nomination at his home in esopus N Y at 6 20 saturday morning when asked if ho would say anything on the matter cf his nomination he said no I 1 shall say nothing whatever upon the subject until I 1 am formally notified of my nomination A telegram from william randolph hearst was read before the conven tion as follows I 1 wish to thank my friends for their unfaltering sup port I 1 think I 1 can best express my appreciation of their loyalty by con linued devotion to the principles of true democracy for which we have fought and by loyal support of the men chosen by the convention to lead the democratic party ex senator david hill Is quoted as saying of course I 1 am delighted with the result and the more so because of the two facts first that judge parker was named on the first ballot and second because with one exception no personal abuse or vl atlon was in each state was allowed to put in nomination their favorite son and vote tor him as we had planned judge parker will I 1 believe make an ideal bandl date and will fit the platform which Is also ideal grover cleveland according to press dispatch refused to see a reporter but sent the following from his I 1 am in absolute agnor ance cf tho action of the st louis convention except in so far aa it has nominated mr parker as presidential candidate with the result I 1 am abundantly gratified and I 1 hope that the remainder of the work of the con will add to the encouraging prospects of democratic success this a all I 1 can possibly say at this time I 1 do not know when I 1 shall have an opportunity to read the platform adopted or to learn of the entire proceedings ce of the convention in any vent it is certain that no urther expression from me may he expected at present I 1 hope to be re lieveld of further importunity on thia subject when asked whether ho intended to support the ticket william jen aings bryan said I 1 have nothing to say except that I 1 expect to cast my vote tor the ticket the news of judge parkers nomi nation was taken to mrs parker mother of the democratic nominee at derby conn tears came to her eyes and tor a moment she could not she said I 1 had hoped if his nomination would be the best thing for the party that he would be nomi aasted and now she said it bis election will be the best thing for the suntry I 1 sincerely hope that ha will ie elected she said that judge parker was a personal lers onal friend of president roose e t and within a year or two had anade him a visit at his oyster bay bome mrs parker Is 80 years of age ALTON B PARKER |
