Show never beffie in the history of eureka was there a more enjoyable fourth of july celebration than that of last monday of course it could have been more blab orate and the prizes for the various could have been larger but it would be difficult to have evereth ng pass off more committees the marshal of the day and his assistants did their work well and are entitled to no little amount of praise the day festivities started in at sauna an did not end until long after midnight and were ed in by not only the people of eureka but of mammoth robinson and balver city as well the streets crowded th the day and the hotels reg tarrants tau rants and refreshment parlors had all they bould do to handle the odowd the parade started at a few minutes past ten and the exen aises at the grand stand fol lowed at 11 clock the ports fo the children on main street and the drilling contest at the grand stand took up the early part of the afternoon and then the crowd took in the ball game two dances both of which were well patronized were the closing numbers of the day a pro gram the parade which started up main street shortly after 10 clock was made up as follows captain hugo Dep rezin marshall of the day and aides V 8 f adf and color guard eureka union band goddess of liberty float with a guard of uniformed maccabee Mace abee under the leader ship of john ivey car of state with aides as guards L float school children city officers speaker and members of committees in carriages bureda miners union eureka volunteer fire department and mercantile floats immediately after the parade exercises ed at the grand stand on main street besides the musical num bers there was an oration by kev reading of the declaration of independence by prof carlson and a brief ad dress of welcome by mayor stack THE DRILLING CONTEST the result of the double handed adril contest which was held in the afternoon was as follows john Min gerotti and edward lewis 36 inches charles peterson and charlie sampson 28 inches theodore iserson ana william andrews 30 inches fhe prize was awarded to lewis and Mine iotti in the single handed contest there were but two entries john Min gerotti and thomas manshell Man Minger won the 50 paize by dull ng 19 inches and mansfield drilled 15 9 18 inches each of the contestants drilled 15 mm utes john merley acted as time keeper and J P turner and J sullivan as judged D D hanks the exalted ruler of the local lodge of elks impersonated uncle sam the public school building was nicely decorated with flags and bunting the work being done by john ivey the uniformed guard of the under the leadership of john ivey made a splendid showing and were well drilled the bureda hill mining hill company donated the water which was used in sprinkling the streets and the ball last monday grant swisher who had charge of the nt tor tha little folks at the hail in the afternoon says that over children were served with refreshments the children were very orderly and the affair was most successful in the pr ze walk prizes were awarded as follows ruby and frances gill first prize berniee swisher and floyd mcfate 2nd prize grace forced and amel a barna won the 1st prize for the best waltzing and the 2nd prize went to eva mitchell Mi and ruby the judges were mrs franks mrs smith and dr hannifin agency of the Stu debacker wagon co were also represented in the parade mise catherine kirkendall the popular young lady who so gracefully grace fally filled the important position tien aa goddeau of liberty is the daughter of mr and mrs J 0 kirkendall well known tintie people miss kirkendall made a beautiful goddess and wag royally entertained by captain hugo Dep rezin the earshil of the day and others in charge of the celebration mrs alice mitchell Mi a sister of mrs jacob manntz was fatally ahot at bone idaho week by a man to whom she was engaged to be married about a year ago mrs mitchell Mi wag also ahot by her husband afterwards bitted suicide at the meeting of columbia lodged 2 D of R held last night the following new officers were installed mrs katie knight N G mrs M copeman V G henroid sacy more fin seey L alighi treas A pope mrs countryman visited the lodge A banquet was spread in the lodge room after the completion of the in stalla tion ceremonies the eureka ball team has played ten games this seabon winning 7 and losing 3 this gevea them a higher percentage than the leading team in the pacific na tion league |
