This question of whether or not term papers and other writing-oriente- d assignments are necessary to the core curriculum has been dis- cussed and examined in thousands of universities throughout the nation As a result the concept of Writing Across (he Curriculum (WAC) was created It has been occasionally controversial as far as classroom application is concerned but overall it has proved relatively effective in improving the skills of our student body WAC was first instituted at CEU in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s as the result of a conference held at the Western States College in Colorado The concept was based primarily upon the assumption that people learn more about a subject in any field of study by writing about it WAC would essentially make all courses more writing intensive allowing students to research and increase their knowledge through enhance their writing skills through continued practice and ficld-oricnl- application Although the concept has been adopted in thousands of institutions across the United Stales controversy has raged regarding WAC's necessity in the core curriculum One professor at CEU says “I wasn't hired to teach English I believe that an increased work load of term papers would my students and reduce educational learning" Brent 1 1 ad dock vice president of academics at CEU assures that this bum-o- ut isn't the case we're trying to establish is that departments can teach writing in their department better than anyone else The English faculty can't leach physicists how "What to write They can teach them grammar but they can’t leach writing” He went on to emphasize three important principles of writing 1 ) Writing is integral to learning regardless of subject matter 2) Writing is a practice rather than a skill that is an ability which requires a continuous effort 3) Any expert in a field can teach writing in that field better than the best general writing instructor Haddock continued by stating (hut in today's world a student cannot survive without the skills WAC is emphasizin the ing Communication and writing skills arc crucial US 32 workforce A survey was conducted throughout engineering firms which indicated that "writing proficiency'' is a major factor in deciding the promotion potential of an engineer Although WAC may not make everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside it docs have an influence on a student's future accomplishments One CEU student says “I hate the idea of writing term papers but I can sec how it would be beneficial" Carrie Icard and English department instructor says that although she hasn't seen a change in her curriculum she has seen a difference in the students enrolled in her classes "This year's group of students is I worry exceptionally bright in regards to writing that I'm giving out too many As" sometimes WAC has met its opposition throughout the nation as well as at CEU but Haddock explains that much of the controversy is due to various misconceptions students and faculty have regarding the WAC concept lie says that although some instructors may feel that placing an emphasis on writing will detract from subject learning that it will on the contrary expand students' educational horizons and encourage them to research topics in greater depth "You can't emphasize writing enough" The WAC concept is currently in practice on the CEU campus and is anticipated to continue for years to come Forensics place third In forensics a “swing" is known as a deuce two tournaments in the same weekend Faints arc accumulated at each single tuumament with awards given and
