Show Zahller's early Christmas wish list by Mike Zahller Viewpoint Editor Advertisers arc beginning lo say Christmas is mean come on it's just around the comer and St Nick is starting to already warm up the 'ol slay That's probably why I iddcnly feel the need to make my annual Christmas wish list Feel free to remind me of someOh yeah happy things I may have missed 1 er shopping think that my First and foremost wish has to ticket lo Colorado so that I can visit my little brother and sister over (he holidays Few would argue that nothing exemplifies the holiday spirit more (hen smiles accmss the faces of twin two year olds That's what I look forward to most not to mention that Denver is also the home of my mother and other important people in my life (LSR) So Santa if you're listening to any of this please put a star next to this one The second thing I wish for is to have a campus like the one I visited this weekend at Northwestern Community College Travelling abroad tends to open one's eyes to the way other people live their lives and the possihlilics that those experiences can be used to help improve their own That's what happened to me Sec Northwestern's campus was like our own but a little bit different Like this campus Northwestern had several dorm halls a cafeteria an administration building and numerous other facilities used lo educate However there also appeared lo be some differences between the two The immediate distinction came from the cafeteria building Not only did it have a cafeteria and a dance area but it also had a I he a plane huge TV lounge with fixxl service that was provided from about 8 am to 2 pm ON THE WEEKENDS! How could any student not like the ability to watch TV on the weekends while eating a freshly cooked meal that wasn't purchased at McDonalds? I know for a solid fact that the majority of male students wouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to watch the Denver Broncos pummlc some other team while eating a hot steamy hamburger and Fires All washed down with a cold Mountain Dcwl mean come on now you could even smoke in the cafeteria But the fun doesn't stop there because even if this building were dosed on the weekends students could still Find fun and adventure within their very own dormrooms My visit into one proved highly enlightening The First thing I saw when I walked in was a huge game room filled with a pop machine a ping pong table a foosc ball table 6 wahers and dryers a microwave an oven and I'mjuMgcKin' warmed up On top of all this their dorms had a pool table a stereo playing in the game room a vending machine two TV rooms a refrigerator telephones and to boot there dorms were separated into smoking and wings God somebody pinch me I must be dreaming Too bad my tuition costs were only a dream Or arc they? Call me strange but it's almost dream-lik- e how students pay thousands of dollars to an administration only to find non-smoki- that they're typing an English paper on a com- ' puter from 19X3 Now let me clarify two things at this point The First is that Northwestern college is not a four year university Quite to the contrary like CEU it falls under (he ranks of community colleges The second is that I know CEU isn't the flinestonc to the Hagle telling us that his facility docs not have the money to advertise more about the college by any means I am fully aware of the computer facilities in the CBB the main building the library and other areas thoroughout campus What I want to fix:us on is the newspaper room I think the second thing on my wish list would be an increase in schixil funding so that we can stan bringing some of ourdassruoms into the 20th century before it ends and we’ve entered the 21st As I sit here typing this anicle I am confronted with several computers which are outdated beyond belief and two printers that arc dose to calling it quits I'm also presented with (he fact that this newspaper stalThas nodark room to develop the necessary pidures that make a newspaper a newspaper Not lo mention that a dark room also helps build skills in photography and dcvcoping Coupled with this is the fact that the rixim is Filled with miniature heaters because the one in the buliding is wackcd out either it fries you to death or makes your face turn blue Finally there appears to be a (rash can in the middle of the newspaper room due to a leaky roof I don't know why but this just doesn't appear to be an ideal learning environment at least not one that would prepare us for the future While we'rc dealing with our environment allow me to wish for better fixxl from Hal's place Ilcy what can it hurt to ask? My third wish has to be for an increase in funding to the Student Health and Wellness Center I know I know I've bashed (heir newsletters in previous articles but Id me state my case Director Terry Holhnxjk wrote a memorandum harms edu- cation Funding would allow him to fully address a growing problem His letter noted the current increase in students who are engaging in sexual activities without taking the necessary precautions Thus my wish is made because it allows the Student Health and Wellness Center to focus on an issue that affects all students and not on issues that only affect a portion ie smoking I would be so much happier if buzz clips were spreading information that people could use instead of reverting back to the infamous theme: “real camels don't smoke" Let's move on to more substantial issues please Hey! I know I low about taking the money that Utah is making off it's increased sales tax on cigarettes and What affects putting it towards this program more people's health smoking or sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy? This way the Student Health and Wellness Center can protect more people's health and I can feel like the taxes that were discriminate forced upon me are cause a lo going good Well that's about it for this year but like I said earlier I'm open to suggestions I just want tosay that Christmas is a lime of giving and I think that it's time for our tuition dollars to start giving back to us It's not like this is a new concept just look lu northwestern community college My recent visit this weekend tells me that there's hope for CEU after all I lowevcr it's going to lake a lot for changes to be made fulfilling my Christmas wish list requires a miracle on Main Street New executive vice president joins CEU community untij the close of this academic year College students enjoy the plentiful outdoor activities in the area of unprotected sex especially AIDS vice-preside- nt CEU's annual Trick or Treat program yields tons of food for local food bank by Jill Edwards Each month the Carbon County Food Bank provides food for 400 families The staple items needed are often not there Money that could be used to help people with needs such as emergency medical care is spent by the food bank buying these staples Students from the College of Eastern Utah worked to alleviate this problem They went on Halloween for canned fixxl Sevenstudents participated collecting a total ty-Five of 560 pounds of food Staples such as soup vegetables and nixxllcs were replenished The amount of food collected will feed over I (XX) people for one month trick-or-treati- 1 Enjoying the last remains of the warm Indian summerCEU student Bryan Bernard enjoys his day playing golf Volunteers gathered at the SUN Center to transport the donations to the food bank Julia Lloyd a student volunteer recalls the event "We were hauling the boxes of fixxl out and it war so heavy that the bottoms of the boxes broke" Ben Brown of the Carbon County Food Bank said the student's annual for canned food is beneficial "It takes the pressure off us to go down and buy things" he said "It frees up our funding to pay for utilities and other things It helps keep us in staples" The event was sponsored by the SUN Center and has taken place for the past three years Employees of (lie center plan to continue the trick-or-treati- tradition I ) ' Dr Mark Spencer will be joining the administrative staff at the College of Eastern Utah on He will be working at the college through an interMonday Nov 17 as executive loan the for duration this academic of college program year Dr Spencer will have assignments in student life academic programs and college-wid- e iniatives Specifically he will work to augment efforts in student recruitment and retention the Prehistoric Museum and the Moab area His expertise in distance learning will be valuable to our work in this area President Jones is looking forward to working with Spencer feature editor j i |
