Show Ooaiolh irosncpinis This is a great opportunity We've had the best year in 30-pl- us years In this business it doesnt happen every year two winning seasons as head coach seven as an assistant Guy Beach is to a Division I program July I at Weber State University lie leaves behind an incredible SI 13 record “I really like the Ogden area I played ball and coached there four years and think it’s a great arcx My family is excited to move and I think its a great time for everyone My daughters are small and just entering school so their transition should be easier " Going to Weber is a good opportunity We've had the best season in years and in this business this just doesn't happen every year And when you're wanted it might be time to go" Beach likes his new head coach Ron Abcgglcn “lie's recruited a bunch of players and is not afraid to play anyone on the bench I Ic's confident and a good coach over a successful program Plus he whipped my butt on the golf course the other day I guess it's fair to let my new boss win However all three ofhis sons are golf pros and he taught them how to play golf I lc better be good at that sport" he quipped At Weber Beach will be"the recruiting coordinator coach on the flour and handle the team's academics I lc said CEU's administration explained to him that winning is not a priority another rexson he chose to leave CEU at this time “We're eighth in the league out of th in funding for the basketball program I'm the lowest paid coach in (he league and my assistant is the lowest paid Every coach in the league gets raises for winning It didn’t happen here this year I didn't want a lot but winning programs do not come along cheap" he explained “I think with Junsie (Cotton) resigning also the funding factor has helped in our decision to move on" In reflecting on his years at CEU Beach felt the Eagles started their national recognition during season with the recruitment of Antione the 90-9Davison “lie was probably the best athlete we have ever had at CEU other than Harold Arcencaux He probably would have been named to the team if the Eagles had finished higher in the league That year we finished fifth" Beach got Davison when mutual friends called CEU's coaching office seeking a college for him to play his sophomore year They knew we would takecarcof him and make him go lodasscs It was Davison who put CEU on the map Utah's Rick Majcnis recruited Davison where he played his junior year Because of lack of playing time Davison left Utah and went to Pfeiffer in NC and where he was named NAIA in France played pro-ba-ll honorable Kris Hill was the first mention player since the ‘60s The last two were Ron Cunningham and Lou West who both played under Curt Jenson Hill was the e first CEU player who got recruited by Beach the D- map” schools He put us on at DcPaul education his continued Hill continued in a University in Chicago and played year Spain After 30-pl- us 1 1 1 an an an “big-tim- He spent last season as an assistant at Utah Valley Community College and leaves this month to play in a professional summer league in the Dominican Republic along with former Eagle Jermaine Avic Junsie Cottcn played the same years as Hill “I le was a good kid both on and off the court Both years he was voted by the student choice awards as outstanding freshman and sophomore respectteam fully He was named to the first and played his final two years at Utah State Before coming back to Price Cotton spent a year as an assistant in the Aggies basketball program I lc has spent the past two seasons as an assistant to Coach Beach Kenny Pratt was another player who helped lead the Eagles to a top conference finish He left CEU to attend Iowa State University and was extremely successful If not recruited in the draft he probably will play ball in Europe Beach added Lxst year's Vcrsile Shaw was named to the team and honorable mention and went on to play at the University of e North where his team met the U of U in the NCAA Tournament He was named Chevy MVP in one of the games This year K'Zell Wesson was the first and only CEU player to ever be named first team All American That's elite he smiled The frosting on the cake was freshmen sensation Arccneaux being named to the honorable mention squad The only other player from the conference to be named was Rick's Danny Bower who was named to the second an Carolina-Charlott- an an team I've always liked my players Beach said They come back to visit and keep me informed on what they are doing They continue to call me and xsk my advice As he was answering questions Beach watched his team members scrimmage “Look three playing in CEU's gym at the same lime You'll not see that anywhere else in the country” He was referring to Wesson and Arcencaux who was joined this week by Vcrsile Shaw who dropped by this week to check in with his former coach Beach has several memorable games he re- members "Both times when I was head coach and we beat CSI are tops in my memory Once when they were number one in the country and sported record and once when they were ranked in the top five in the country" He smiled when he talked about CEU's victory at UVSC in their inaugural season last year in Orem “It was the best feeling to beat a team who has twice the budget twice the coaching staff and a new building most D-- l colleges would kill for That game will always rank as one of my all time favorites" He is especially proud of being ranked in the top 20 in the nation all season and being named as numberlO in the nation at the end His final memory for his team will be presenting their rings for finishing first in the conference "I will always wear it with pride" Beach has admired a lot of his fellow coaches in the region "Dixie's Dave Rose was probably my favorite mentor He was a great person and recruiter He recently signed on as an assistant at BYU so he'll go against his team when the Y meets Weber in basketball next season" He also liked Roily Williams at Northern Idaho Fred Trinkle at CSI Steve Irons at CSI and Norm Parrish at SLCC His coaching philosophies will remain the same at Weber as they were at CEU Recruit the best players possible and adjust your coaching game to the talent of the players "Ronnie (Stubbs) and I recruited some great players but not always great citizens I think Junsie and I have recruited a good mix of kids very good kids It's been a big adjustment for the Black athletes coming in but we’ve given them a great opportunity to play for a winning program and get an education We have put CEU on the map in men's basketball” He named several people who really liclpcd his program and student athletes Doug Swinburne as the host family coordinator Terry Fry and Sam Farlaino They really supported our kids and was were always there when we needed them Also CEU's great faculty who worked with our program to make sure the athletes got an education a 1 2-- 0 Angel earns female
