Barry Maxfield staff writer With a mainstream of computers in the daily facets of life education institutions at all levels are questioning what their role is in teaching students computer literacy This is the case at CEU where there is currently an active facultyadminis-tratio- n discussion going on concerning computer literacy Currently the CEU curriculum and instruction committee is discussing the computer literacy requirement for general education The general education requirement is two credit hours which is software specific to spreadsheet or wordpruccssing programs Brent Haddock vice president of academics stales "There are various degrees of thinking coming from different departments and there is an ongoing discussion that hasn't been finalized The curriculum and instruction committee has been discussing it for two and half months Just recently we had Russell Goodrich of the office information program visit with the curriculum and instruction committee to share his views on computer literacy" The reason for these discussions is to determine a direction for strengthening the core requirement in computer literacy and according to I laddock a plan for computer literacy will be decided upon in the next curriculum and instruction committee's meeting Haddock however has a concern which is more fundamental than what is happening at CEU "Computer literacy in the eyes of some because of it's impact on society should be a high school requirement You should come to college with some computer experience We feel that's not happening" This sentiment is voiced in the admission's requirements of other colleges and universities across the country One example is the University of Nevada which requires a I 2 unit computer literacy course as part of a 12 12 unit high school core curriculum for admission Another school Mount Carmel states: "We require our entering students as part of their degree requirement to establish themselves as 'computer proficient' by taking and passing a computer-base- d examination When they establish this proficiency it is posted to their official transcript that they are "computer proficient" with a "posted to pass" If they do not pass they are placed in a basic four week computer skills class after which they can retake the exam This is repeated until they pass the exam but all this must be completed by their second semester of enrollment" CEU has been corresponding with other institutions around the nation and looking at their computer literacy requirements to gel an idea as to what other schools are doing on the issue of computer literacy “We actually sent out (on a message to institutions about computer literacy and if they have requirements what are they" Responses were returned which ranged from no requirement to very strict requirements In the slate other institutions have varying requirements for computer literacy but all state institutions seem to he moving toward a requirement of computer literacy at the time of admissions by showing that courses were taken in high school and passed successfully or a computer proficiency test prior to admission With computers in the mainstream of American culture the importance of computer literacy is stressed in all facets of what we do Slates I laddock “I think before long everybody is going to have to be computer literate in order to succeed in il) life" Instructor injured in accident After sustaining major back injuries on Saturday and surgery on Monday I lenning Olsen planned on walking with his graduating class at BYU's commencement exercises today Olsen will receive his educational doctorate with the class of "97 in Provo An experienced rider Olsen was riding a horse during the filming of the reinactmenl of Butch Cassidy in Castle Valley Rehearsals were practiced but when the gun shooting sound started Olsen's horse spooked and he was thrown to the ground hitting the top of his head He was dazed but got up and walked around He was transported to Castleview Hospital and later Utah Valley Hospital where he had his fifth and sixth vertebrae fused His fourth vertebrae is cracked Olsen began his career at CEU in July 74 as an accountant in the business office Shortly thereafter he became a faculty member in the business department Olsen advises the campus PBL club I lis classes are being taught by Ron Vogel and Russell Goodrich until he returns |
