Show L CEU escapes budget cuts by Becca Thornton staff writer Recently the College of Eastern Utah Snow and Dixie colleges were able to escape budget cuts that were implemented by the appropriation's committee on the state legislature Had these cuts gone into effect CEU could have suffered several losses As a continually growing college the need and demand that CEU secs for instructors that will meet the needs of the student population has become overwhelming The cuts if made would have seriously stifled the opportunity for the growth of the faculty and staff An estimated $H8(XX) cut would have been the equivalent of two added teaching positions Not only would the losses have affected the faculty and staff but would have made it a necessity to place serious cutbacks on many of (he programs that are an important part of CEU Funding from these programs would have had to he turned over to other areas in order to make ends meet Unlike CEU Snow and Dixie the other colleges and universities in the state were not as fortunate to have Many of these escaped the cuts schools are having to look at the possibility of ridding themselves of instructors and programs that arc needed in order to make their schools run as smoothly as they have in the past At schools like the University of Utah where it can take up to a year to fill a vacancy in a teaching position the money that was allotcd for that position will be taken by the legislature and put to use in other noneducational areas The cuts will not only effect higher education but (he legistors are moving in on the funds allocated to public education as well The legislature is feeling the financial burden of reconstructing many of the Utah roads and in order to obtain more funds they have looked into cutting money from every possible area When CEU President Dr Grace Jones learned of the possibility of the budget being cut she asked for the support of the faculty and staff the Board of Trustees and ASCEU to petition the legislature through a campaign Through these letters individuals affiliated with CEU were able to get their views out to their respective senators and representatives making it possible for their concerns to be heard by many members from both houses of the letter-- writing legislature John Nelson Utah Council of Stu- dent Body Presidents lobbyist looked upon this campaign favor ably lie was convinced that the letters rallies and visits to the capitol helped tremendously and without their presence the cuts would have reached out further into the educational systems ASCEU president Craig Knott g headed the campaign In this students the on focused (hat campaign letters were written to legislators and senators and although it was a form letter it was the goal of those who composed the letter to get the legislators to look at the budget cuts from a perspective that would keep the students in mind "In writing the letter it was important for us to try to make the legislators look at these cuts from a student perspective As a student government we have already headed one other campaign and we were able to see the successes (hat came from it Our intentions were to make (his campaign just as successful and we appreciate the support we received from the student body" Because CEU was able to escape these cuts they will not have to worry about taking any immediate action that would stifle the growth and success of the college Now as a result of being saved from these cuts CEU will be able to look forward and sec many educational opportunities at CEU advance letter-writin- letter-- writing Library's newest acquisitions as of March '97 Medical School Admission Requirements Hand Book of Clinical Skills 1997-9- 8 Gray's Anatomy (not the famous anatomy atlas) Psychological Testing Beginner's guide to the Internet and World Wide Web Fundamentals of Nursing: the Art and Science of Nursing Care Guide for the Biological Successful Scientific Writing: a Medical and Sciences Dental Admission Test: the Betz Guide Guide to Medical School and the MCAT Immunobiology: the Immune System in Health and Disease Test Success: Test Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students Engaging Ideas: the Professor's Guide to Integrating Writing Critical Thinking and Active Learning Into the Classroom Qualitative Research Design: an Interactive Approach 1 997 What Color is Your Parachute?
