Show iTipsiii CEU prehistoric casts featured in NY artist's web page by Miranda Odendal editor Those of you who are regular surfers on the web may have noticed the College of Eastern Utah or Price mentioned in some unlikely locations There has been posted a new "Dinosaur Tracks in Coal Mines" website by an artist in New York City Allen McCollum was inspired to create his rend itions of the d inosaur tracks when d rivi ng Gall Raby CEU museum artist worked with John Serfustini to create the Castle Country exhibit at the Utah State Capitol Building In Salt Lake City recently Olsen continued from pag e6 much clearer picture of where our students are educationally and why they leave" Dr Olsen first came to CEU in July of 74 when he was hired as an accountant for the college after graduating from Utah State University He began teaching business courses Spring of 73 where he has been a leader in new course work and technology CEU was the state of Utah flagship in preparing income tax for the public The college has advanced from doing taxes longhand then by computer and now through electronic filing For the past 15 years the business department has prepared hundreds of tax returns each year for the low income and senior citizens The business department at CEU has graduated nationally recognized winners in accounting competitions Dr Olsen served as business department chair for eleven years and has taught business and computer courses as well as being a CEU German language instructor He considers himself an educator first and a business man second I le was bom and raised in Castle Dale on a through the middle of Utah when he came across the CEU Prehistoric Museum He received permission to create his own molds which gave rise to the sculptures He was particularly impressed by the fact that the footprints so common in this community are "natural casts" which are produced as a cast through various geological processes "The position the track casts occupy in relation to the labor of mining and how they found their way into a community museum seemed almost like an idealized version of the way we like to imagine an artwork emerges" says McCollum A single track of a large extinct animal may cattle ranch Dr Olsen went to Emery Counbe more impressive and informative than its try High School where he developed a love bones or teeth Thousands of natural casts for drama He is interested in the arts and has occur in mine surfaces in Utah in served communi theater and ty participated They are usually found in Upper Cretaceous as the director of the Castle Valley Pageant from 1989 to 1992 1 le currently holds a two year position on the Utah Arts Council Education has always been important to Dr Olsen In his office is a picture of his mother in a cap and gown whim she graduated from BYU home study at the age of 73 He stated that she is his inspiration "Just having knowledge and knowing a lot of facts is not the important point of education What is important is who you are and what education makes you into The answers are constantly changing and students cannot just learn the facts they need to have the ability to reason and think" In Dr Olsen's office is a quote which reads: "rut the responsibility to see to think to relate and toconcludeonto thestudent rather than point and tell Advise by querying students until they see their own paths to W I II Q continued from page 6 mentioned about this new bicycle since it is still kind of secret Vocational rehabilitation is helping Willo out because he is a disabled veteran Because of this he said "I want to mention that the good state of Utah is helping me build my dreams " I le also wants to thank Gene Crocco of the vocational rehabilitation who has been very supportive Earl Lund is currently over the machine shop but is retiring soon 1 le is a wealth of knowledge to the students and encourages them to be creative in their work and to apply themselves each and every day "His technical support has been invaluable" says Willo The sad thing about Lund's retirement besides losing a good teacher is that when Lund goes so the machine shop might commented Willo "When we ask the instructor about next quarter he seems uncertain maybe even doubtful I know that there are quite a number of people that have projects going myself included that would really enjoy another quarter at least he said Willo is just one of the students here at CEU that are trying to keep the machine shop open If the administration is just going to close it because they haven't found a fill the replacement for Lund then they hope someone who is qualified will step up and position The machine shop is there to teach students practical working skills that will help them to get jobs in the future It is another side of academic learning offered here at CEU If it doses so does the opportunity for students to learn these skills as well as experiencing the art of mechanical creation Willo feels that it will be a great loss to the community as well Willo obviously feels very strongly about the machine shop It is an art form to him which allows him to be creative and expressive in his work "It's an art form that requires attention to detail" He is very intent on try ing to save CEU's machine shop and would appreda te your a few good in support If you are interested in the machine shop or just interested hearing stories about the "real world" contad Willo one of CEU's interesting mature students East-Centr- al awl beds They were formed when a dino- saurs walked in swamp beds which then gradually filled withsediment (the best forms are those which have been filled with shale or siltstone) with the flixxJing of a local river followed by the long fossilization process The average track removed weighs 45 kilograms (kg) however specimens weighing up to 140 kg have been removed in Most of the footprintsare those short-toes of on wide-fee- t most are threetoed with few four-toe- d and even fewer fivetoed After being removed from the mine (and any other surrounding tracks) the footprints lose some of their initial value for determining information about the animal its movement and habits However since the local aimmunity is dependent on mining coal their removal is imperative as they hang down into the mining area and create a hazard McCollum's website and much more inforimmacu-lateainditi- on mation on the dinosaur tracks and McCollum's artwork can be found at the location: http:wwwstadiunwebcomReprints Introductioahtml Dinosaur footprint casts are commonly found in coal mines In the Eastern Utah area photo by Aaron Brockbank The web spreads into CEU departmental home pages by Kelly Perotti staff writer The Internet is a resource of virtually every subject imaginable People of all ages are the to Internet as a way to find inforturning mation quickly Many colleges and universities post information about themselves on their home pages including CEU The college's general catalogue is one of the links fipm CEU's home page at http: wwwreuedu I iere students can find information about a department just by clicking on its title In addition to the general catalogue there is a link named "departments" which provides information from the chemistry life sciences business and computer science graphic arts and nursing departments By choosing to view one of these pages students can get a more description of what th departments offer Some of the classes listed in these departments have put their course syllabus and class outline on the web page Chemistry professor Jan Gryko has pages for his chemistry 101 and 121 classes Gryko decided to put his syllabi and previous tests on webpages because so manystudentsspend time looking at the Internet that they would be sure to come across it rutting tests on the web site gives students a chance to see what the tests they take will be like Eventually Gryko plans to create a more interactive site where students can take a practice test cm the site and will be able to find out which problems they did wrong Because this is more difficult to do than a regular web site Gryko plans to take time this summer to do it and plans to have it implemented next fall |
