Show January 12 1995 Pace 9 Indian Summer in t i ramd C-TTT- r S —V Michi Miyagi (LflOeOl and Corrie Allen examine Indian ruins while on an Environmental studies trip in South- r 12 && Js 4 J I eastern Utah 1 S rV-''T- AT i ’ J $ Af m J f tt - mLI : -- Text taken fnim Jeff Haycock's journal l)ay I It's ahNii 10:3(1 am and the van has driven into the parking of Kane Gulch entrance The sun is radiating it's light everywhere and there isn't a cloud in sight It seems summer here with the cedar trees and sage hush still green as always Hut as we enter the canyon you can see that Indian Summer has taken it's home inside the canyon walls as golden leaves fall from the cottonwood trees littering the trails and water ponds As we continue through the canyon the heauty of fall continues until finally about lour miles later we are rewarded w ith a mystical site of an Indian ruin that has taken protection in an alcove The Indian ruin has been named Junction Ruin because of it's Hisition in the canyon w here Kane Gulch joins Grand Gulch and this is w hen we made camp lor the night Hut before I called it a day I made a quick hike up the rock slide of one of the canyon walls Ilicrc I could see Ihe sun die in the western horion with brilliant arrays of yellow orange and red reaching out Day 2 The next day awoke to the smell of coffee I eagerly began to make breakfast but before I finished eating everyone was packing up for (lie day's hike which I didn't expect to he uhoul nine miles Ax we walked mile alter mile through ankle twisting cobblestone stream beds and an occasional jungle we saw many ruins which we explored and examined The ruins were all basically structured the same but the art on potsherds were amazingly different I in color and design Our quest lor an arrowhciid was left unsatisfied ruin after ruin Many other mysteries were left unanswered about the Pueblo and Anasai Indians Why nothing but cat and deer tracks Disappointed I turned my interests to the scenery around me I could see Ihe Hluc Mountains to llie northeast and to the south was Navajo Mountain and the beautiful red rin ks of Monument Valley Day 4 l lot where wc were wailing Finally when the van arrived we packed our backpacks in Ihe van and left the canyon parking ’s k— TV Above: Environmental ex- plore and examine Indian ruins while on the trip Left: Ed Potts and Corrie Allen view an early Indian dwelling The follow ing day after a warm cup of cider I could feel tin’ past day's hiking taking a loll on all of my muscles especially on my legs Hut after a brisk run to a spring where I refilled my water bottles I felt revived and ready for breaking camp and more ruin exploring After about five miles we made a camp and I decided to find a way to the lop of the canyon to see if I could sxrt any animals up tlicrc Alter finding a way to the lop I quietly walked aiouiul and found hud to wait for our leader (liric liwert) to hitch hike back to Kane Gulch parking lot to gel Ihe van and return to Hullet Canyon tv’S studies students Day 3 All of us were full of what nature had given us in this canyon When wc got to the parking lot at the top of the canyon we all 7 3 did they leave their homes so suddenly? Then just as we begin asking ourselves we have to race the sun to our campsite before the daylight left us lost in the dark or ihe first time on this trip I awoke to the warmth of the morning sun heating down on my tent It fell good and welcoming alter a cold night This was ihe last day of Ihe trip ia bv' J fc" V |
