growth of CEU n by Dani Weigand staff writer 3 students are currently attending the College of Eastern Utah Out of these students 146 are living on campus This leaves over 80 percent of CEU's students as commuters (local residents) It is anticipated that student population will double by 1997 With this growth in the number of students CEU administration hopes to recruit students from areas other than Carbon and Emery counties In order for this growth to take Over 18CX) place new housing facilities must be built to accommodate students Dean of Housing Jay Andrus states “We'd be in deep trouble without this new dorm space (Aaron Jones CEU tuition to inCr©3SG by Leona J Christensen staff writer Rapidly rising tuition costs are a common concern for most college students The higher expense of education will increase to a total of 15 percent over the next three years amounting to an additional $46 each year for College of Eastern Utah students The tuition enlargement is a result of a new tuition formula established by the Utah Board of Regents CEU President Michael Petersen said '“I support the general direction of policy I do have some reservations about linking CEU and Snow to Dixie" The increase will balance junior college tuition President Petersen stated that Dixie is not the same type of institution as CEU and Snow It is more of a suburban community college Over 70 percent of Dixie students are Washington County residents who commute to school In contrast only approximately 50 percent of CEU and Snow students commute They need the lower tuition rates to compensate for the higher cost of living such as on campus food and housing Concern from college presidents commission staff members and the Regents in regard to the extra cost of living expenses could reopen the issue during the November Board of Regents meeting As a result of placing Dixie at an intermediate level between Utah’s community colleges and junior colleges CEU tuition will Tuition Increases at Utah Junior Colleges 1995-9- 8 $1050 $1000 Residence Hall) as far as new growth is concerned Thai's the bottom line” To provide new growth two more phases of Aaron Jones hall will be built The original Aaron Jones hall was constructed in 1940 only three years after the College of Eastern Utah was established Since the building is 54 years old it has been decided that after phases II and III arc completed the original Aaron Jones building will be tom down The construction of phase II is expected to be completed in March 1995 Construction of phase III should be complete in spring of next year By building in phases and using members of the Physical Plant the college will save approximately SI million Another benefit to building in phases is the cost of living for students will only increase approximately S50 If phases II and III were constructed at the same time costs would rise to where student housing at CEU would not be competitive with other colleges One of the drawbacks to building in phases is construction time is consuming and takes members of the Physical Plant away from of other buildings on To campus help combat this students involved in construction trades at CEU arc helping with construction of the dorms Growth at CEU will not increase to the point of classes being over crowded Andrus says teachers do See AJ Phase II page 12 years coaching track and field at the college and sent many of his athletes to the national junior college championships “Even after al I of the conference junior colleges had dropped track Barms continued CEU's program by taking on Utah's And on those same road trips because of the limited track budget we always ate at cheap restaurants and stayed in cheap hotels Ych that's how I remember him percent The new tuition formula places less focus on national economic and cost of living figures and more emphasis on Utah's economic issues In the past tuition increases at all state schools were based on national inflation cost of living levels and tuition increases at other national peer institutes The Board of Regents has conceived a new formula that will equalize the tuition increases at all Utah colleges and universities For example if the University of Utah's 97-9- 96-9- 7 95-9- 6 94-9- 5 Dixie 8 Snow tuition is raised $100 CEU students would pay an increase of 48 percent or $48 Previously tuition hikes were used to finance base increases such as cost of living salary raises for faculty and staff However for the past three years the Utah Student Association has lobbied the Slate Legislature to use the additional income from tuition to establish an Urgent Student Support fund The income is used directly at school to improve student services CEU has used the fund to improve financial aid academic advising and the library stu- dent athlete" He remembers flected Jenson “He was dedicated to track and had great ideas and plans for the sport" Many of Barrus' athletes
